The Hintergebirgsradweg R9 runs along the route of the former forest railway, which once transported timber through the Hintergebirge mountains. The family-friendly route starts from the centre of Reichraming and takes around three and a half hours along wide gravel and forest paths to Unterlaussa.
The cycle path is ideal for gravel bikes and (e-)MTBs. Several tunnels lead through the impressive rocky backdrop, so it is important to have good lighting on your bike. The interplay of rock and forest characterises the route, while the shade and stream provide pleasant cooling in summer.
Dive further and further into the Kalkalpen National Park whose beech forests are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wildly beautiful surroundings reveal clear streams, botanical features, a refreshing waterfall and even a lynx sculpture.
Catering is provided by the historic Klaushütte, once home to the lumberjacks, and the Ortbauerngut inn. You can set up your own camp at the Weißwasser b ivouac site or the Steyrsteg bivouac site and spend the night in the open air.
The former forest railway, along the route of which the cycle path runs, bears witness to the history of the lumberjacks who shaped the Hintergebirge. Insights are provided by the Reichraminger Holzknecht Museum and the miners' house in Unterlaussa.
The Alpenland 360° destination has even more to offer: Pyhrn-Priel delights with peaks and alpine pastures, Bad Hall with thermal springs, the Kalkalpen National Park with UNESCO-protected forest wilderness - and a combination of city life and cultural heritage can be found around Steyr.

Anyone travelling here by bike quickly realises how special this landscape is. I grew up here in Steyrtal, but even today I am still discovering new aspects of this area on my bike. The Kalkalpen National Park offers peace, space and paths where you can really experience nature.
