From the center of Reichraming, cycle along the Reichramingbach on Anzenbachstraße to the Anzenbach parking lot. Here, turn right onto Waldbahnstraße into the Hintergebirge. Without noticeable incline, cycle to the Maieralm junction. Be careful here and don't be misled by the course of the stream. Cross the Plaißabach and then follow the Großer Bach on the right.
After about 1 1/4 hours of riding, you will reach what was once the most important log driving structure in the Hintergebirge. The Große Klause is the oldest klause in the Hintergebirge. For the log driving route of 11.6 kilometers to the Schallauer-Rechen in Reichraming, the wood took one hour. Between the two tunnels, you can descend to the gorge on a reconstructed section of the log driving trail.
Now, only a few meters separate us from the Klaushütte. Built in 1758, it served as accommodation for the lumberjacks. Today, it is an ÖBF supply station for thirsty and hungry cyclists and hikers. The Klaushütte is open from May 1 to mid-October (depending on weather), Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and in October on weekends from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
We cycle along the Großer Bach between Bärenmauer and Teufelsgraben, past the Keixen, until we reach the entrance to the Große Schlucht. For a rest, there is a small hut here at the Annerlsteg.
Tip! At the Annerlsteg, you can start on the log driving trail.
Our cycle path now leads us through some longer tunnels of the former Waldbahn. At kilometer 20, you will reach the Schleierfall (waterfall), where the Hochlachtbach falls into the Schwarzer Bach. We continue cycling to Weißwasser. Here, a larger settlement for workers was established due to the bauxite mining in the Blaberg, Prefing, and Schwarza area. From Weißwasser, continue to Mooshöhe. Upon arrival, the snack station offers a cosy place to rest. From now on, it goes downhill to Unterlaussa. Here you will find the connection to the R31 Nationalpark-Kalkalpen cycle path or R7 Ennstal cycle path.
Please note: Cycling and mountain biking in the National Park area is allowed from April 15 to October 31 from 2 hours after sunrise until 1 hour before sunset! Some cycle paths are also designated as hiking or riding trails. Always expect oncoming hikers or riders!
