Via ferrata Dragonwall

Starting place: 5310 St. Lorenz am Mondsee
Destination: 5310 St. Lorenz am Mondsee

This via ferrata is a wonderful and interesting tour for experienced climbers.

ATTENTION: not suitable for children, young people and inexperienced climbers!!!

Please note the current warnings and closures!

The via ferrata has already been checked and is now accessible again. Please note that the ascent is at your own risk and requires alpine experience and appropriate equipment.

The difficulty is between B and C with some places being D. As there is no way out of the climb, good physical condition and muscle strength are required. At the summit, you will be rewarded with a fantastic panorama that extends far beyond the Mondseeland region. The main criterion is the descent! This is an alpine climb of the highest difficulty level. You have only conquered the Drachenwand when you are safely back in the valley!

Since its opening in 2009, the Drachenwand via ferrata has been one of the most spectacular via ferratas in Austria. After just a 20-minute approach, you enter this unique via ferrata along the eastern ridge of one of the most striking mountain massifs in the Alpine foothills. The actual via ferrata then follows over a total length of 600m, with 400 meters of altitude difference to be overcome. The average ascent time is approx. 2 hours and at the summit at over 1,000m above sea level you are rewarded with a fantastic panorama over Lake Mondsee and the Salzkammergut. Helmets and safety equipment are compulsory on the via ferrata. The level of difficulty of the Drachenwand via ferrata is mostly level C, with some exposed sections at level D. The length and difficulty of the climb, including the descent, should not be underestimated, and there is no way to get off!

Since July 2010, there has been a new special attraction - the suspension bridge from the Franzosenschanze to the pillar wall. The brave have the opportunity to conquer the suspension bridge at lofty heights far above the abyss, securely roped up.

The Drachenwand via ferrata and especially the descent require alpine experience and a good level of fitness. The descent is an alpine climb of the highest difficulty level! Sure-footedness, a head for heights and alpine experience on climbs of difficulty levels C and D, as well as adequate equipment are basic requirements for starting the via ferrata. You have only conquered the Drachenwand when you are safely back in the valley.

Unfortunately, climbers die on the descent every year. The main reason is overconfidence, the thought "I've already done the via ferrata, what else is there to do...", a lack of fitness and inadequate equipment. Please spare our emergency organizations, especially the great volunteer members of the Mondseeland Mountain Rescue, these stressful missions.

Please allow at least 4 hours for your tour. Last access to the via ferrata 5 hours before sunset. Do not attempt the tour in wet conditions.

The via ferrata is not suitable for children under the age of 14 or those without sufficient alpine experience!
