264 km and 6,800 meters of altitude biking fun through the Mühlviertler Granite Region
The Mühlviertler Granite (High)Land – majestic above the Alpine foothills, magnificent distant views, rugged mixed forests, amber-colored brooks, scattered farm hamlets, ... Over millions of years, the former primeval mountain range eroded and revealed a wonderful granite core. To the west a forest-rich (trunk) mountain range, to the north idyllic inter-river ridges, and to the south a rural panoramic high plateau. This bike route lets you experience the fascination of Austria’s oldest landscape: with three peaks, challenging climbs, flowing descents, crossings, panoramic stretches, ... and individual technical sections. Pure granite bike fun!
Overview:
Stage 1: Summit assault on the (trunk) mountain range of the Granite (High)Land
Biking from the deep Danube gorge to the panoramic view village of Pfarrkirchen im Mühlkreis (840 m), at the southern peak of the (trunk) mountain range! After an amazing Alpine view descent, the route follows the rural rolling hills on the western flank of the ridge. The second summit assault leads you to the mixed forest peak of Ameisberg (941 m), the highest point of the (trunk) mountain range! A varied fun descent and rolling ride to the northern end of the ridge. Then you bike through gently rolling highlands with a harmonious forest-field mosaic into the secluded Kohlstatt. A magnificent start!
Highlights:
Stage 2: Over the North Cape and inter-river ridges to the Bohemian Forest Roof
From Kohlstatt, you bike – the Bohemian Forest ridge in view – happily through a gently rolling mixed forest-meadow mosaic to the northernmost point of the round. Congratulations! The return journey starts with wonderful forest biking on the Zwischenmühl ridge. In Julbach, the Meran of the Mühlviertel, you switch to the meadow-rich Kleine Mühl valley. Along the valley flank and over hidden inland hills, the route leads to Sarleinsbach. Final delights: three breathtaking inter-river ridges and a summit assault to the high village St. Stefan am Walde (805 m), on the Bohemian Forest roof!
Highlights:
Stage 3: Bohemian Forest biking, high ridge cruising & cult viewing peak
Magnificent start: Wonderful high biking on the Bohemian Forest roof – with wide views & forest trails! In Guglwald, a delightful descent into the Steinerne Mühl valley excites. A mountainous trip into the inland lets you experience solitude. Back at the Steinerne Mühl begins the dreamlike ascent to the Petersberg high ridge with a final panoramic high cruising! After flowing downhill fun, the challenging summit assault starts to the cult viewing peak Hansberg (850 m)! Long enjoyable descent into the Kleine Rodl valley and opposite uphill to the summit castle village Waxenberg (748 m).
Highlights:
Stage 4: Panoramic high plateau with valley side trips
From the summit castle village Waxenberg, the bike flows back into the idyllic meadow valley of the Kleine Rodl. A short forest ascent, then you stand on the last high ridge of the northern Granite land. The route leads through wide meanders down hidden valleys to Neußerling. There begins the rural panoramic high plateau, interspersed with deep forest ravines. Noble cultural cycling meets – partly tricky – biking fun in the ravines. In St. Martin im Mühlkreis, a legendary Danube valley view descent to the Danube port town Untermühl perfectly rounds off the stage.
Stage 5: Bikers Heaven – flank surfing between Danube current and high plateau
The grand finale! In the Danube port town Untermühl begins unique flank surfing through wonderful slope gorge forests – 3x high plateau and back. Impressive intermediate goal: the 360° panoramic viewing tower „Danube on the Mountain“ (613 m) in Kirchberg ob der Donau. In the Kleine Mühl valley follows the last flank ascent and a pleasurable farewell round over the beloved Granite (High)Land. Crowning conclusion: 7.5 km dream descent over the heart of the natural wonder Schlögener Danube loop and relaxed river biking along the Danube.

The aroma of fresh bread and sweet pastries is the first thing that greets you at the Konditorei Bauer - closely followed by the warm welcome from the Panorama Café team. While your gaze wanders over the sweeping, charming landscape of the hilly Danube region over a coffee, behind the scenes - in the bakery - a story is being written that combines craftsmanship, regional passion and family dedication. It is Gerhard and Catrin Bauer who make this place more than just a bakery and patisserie. The Panorama Café is all about enjoyment, close ties to the Danube region and dedication to craftsmanship.
In 2003, master baker and confectioner Gerhard Bauer took over the traditional business in Pfarrkirchen. Together with his partner Catrin, he is now the fourth generation to run the patisserie. Originally founded by Gerhard's parents in 1970, the business has developed over the decades into a panoramic café with breathtaking views of the Mühlviertel hills and the Danube region. In addition to the traditional bakery, Café Bauer has also made a name for itself as a patisserie - everything from homemade chocolates, light fruit tarts and the classic apple strudel is created here with great attention to detail. A particular speciality of the house is the Pfarrkirchner banana bomb, for which guests return time and time again. Those who come for the fresh baked goods will also find a varied selection: fresh bread every day and a wide range of pastries. Those with a sweet tooth can also look forward to high-quality, homemade ice cream - something Gerhard is proud to talk about. In addition to its day-to-day operations, Café Bauer also relies on its apprenticeship programme as another flagship. With highly motivated apprentices, they proudly contribute to the promotion of young talent in the retail, bakery and patisserie sectors.
The Panorama Café is not only known for its delicious baked goods, but also for the breathtaking view it offers its guests. The hilly Mühlviertel region stretches out from the panoramic terrace, gently sloping down to the Danube. Here, the beauty of Upper Austria can be savoured to the full - and with a full stomach. The view is not the only reminder of the region, as the patisserie attaches great importance to regional products such as eggs and organic rye, which are then used to make the popular Mühlviertel organic rye bread, for example.
Visitors particularly enjoy baking demonstrations, where they can look over the shoulder of master patissier Gerhard at close quarters. A visit to the café not only brings anticipation of a culinary experience, but is also the perfect opportunity to relax. From the panoramic terrace, you can enjoy the view of Pfarrkirchen and the surrounding area offers a variety of MTB, cycling and hiking tours right on the doorstep: from the Penzenstein-Runde and the Mühlviertler Dom-Runde to the Traumblickrunde or the Schmetterlingswanderweg. Whether for the landscape or the banana bomb, a visit to the panorama café is definitely worthwhile.
These tours also lead directly past the culinary partner:

This cozy café is very popular with the locals; we are famous for our excellent tee and coffee as well as for the delicious cakes and ice-cream.
Here you can gaze into the distance and discover the beautiful Danube valley, the Sauwald forest opposite and the Mühlviertel. The Mühlviertel adjoins the Donauleitn to the north and conveys a certain tranquillity with its gently shaped ridges and hilltops. Granite and gneiss form the geological subsoil, which appear here and there as striking rock formations and weathered shapes. The acidic and nutrient-poor soils did not make it easy for agriculture, in addition to the harsh, cool and low-precipitation climate of the high altitudes. Typical of the region are hilly cultivated landscapes (Bühel), which contain various copses. In contrast, there are agrarian plateaus with little structure. Today, agriculture is very intensive, with dairy farming as the main sector. In the past, the cultivation of flax and hops as well as linen weaving were important sources of income alongside agriculture. The beer brewing tradition is still alive today.
The devil once had riches and precious treasures. He buried his greatest treasure very close by, in Obermühl on the Teufelskirche. "The Devil's Money Laundering" tells the story of what else he used to do with his treasures.

Wooded highlands...
Around a quarter to a third of the central Mühlviertel highlands are covered by forest, and forest cover has been steadily increasing for a few centuries. Even today, this trend is continuing due to the abandonment of agricultural utilisation ("farmer death") and has led to an increase in forest cover of 5 to 10 % in the last 20 years. Natural forest types would mainly be beech forests, but spruce is actually the dominant forest tree in the current forest landscape. Exceptions are low-lying areas and steep, semi-natural hillside forests, where deciduous trees are more common. If spruce forests are underutilised for decades, they are more susceptible to severe weather events and consequential damage such as beetle infestation (spruce bark beetle) and the small spruce leaf wasp.
Living in harmony with nature is wonderful and if you appreciate nature and its creatures and do not envy others their good fortune, it will thank you for it. "The helpful cones" tell the story of how a forest elf gave a poor charcoal burner a contented life.

Chronik
