The Eferding Basin - once dominated by floodplain landscape crisscrossed by the meanders of numerous Danube arms, this large landscape basin was dangerous and arduous to cross. Today, a contrasting natural and cultural landscape delights with relaxed pleasure cycling at its best. A perfect start is the historic Danube market in Ottensheim. Located at the end of the Eferding Basin, this place has long been an important ferry crossing. The picturesque market square tells of a long tradition as a trading hub. A Danube highlight! From the ferry dock, you first cycle along charming riverside houses upstream and arrive in a loop at a forest-surrounded old Danube arm. This was deliberately preserved after the construction of the Ottensheim-Wilhering power plant and has since served as an international rowing regatta course. An idyllic bike path runs along the old Danube. Shortly after, you reach the (new) mighty Danube stream again. On the left is the impressive Ottensheim-Wilhering power plant. On the right, you ride proudly on the Danube embankment along the legendary Danube cycle path Treppelweg upstream.
The bike runs smoothly, a breeze refreshes, the tires hum... pure river cycling! Rustic riverside floodplain forests turn your gaze inward. They remind you of a time when even boatmen had difficulty passing through the extensive floodplain landscape. By the Feldkirchen bathing lakes, the riverside forests thin out. Soon after, you leave the mythical river. Now you pedal enjoyably on farm roads in a wide arc through a mosaic of fertile fields - past large four-sided farmsteads, artistic wayside shrines, and the charming market town of Feldkirchen - to the Danube bridge in Aschach. On clear days, the ride over the tall bridge surprises with an incredible view of the Alps. With the historic Danube market Aschach, you have reached the start of the Eferding Basin. Congratulations! Here, too, a ferry crossing has long been important. The picturesque town center impresses with its market square open towards the Danube (!) and richly decorated townhouses. Both tell of prosperity as a trade hub on the Danube bank. A true Danube gem!
After the diverse impressions, the easy ride downstream on the Treppelweg offers a relaxing break - feeling the flow and wandering thoughts. In Brandstatt, you leave the Danube channel and cycle on farm roads through lush vegetable fields into the plain. On the ridge above the plain watches the Schaunberg castle ruins, Upper Austria's largest castle complex! And in the rural village of Pupping, the small monastery complex reveals itself as the death place of St. Wolfgang! After Seebach, bike paths accompany a main road into the center of the Eferding Basin, the city of Eferding. It is the third oldest city in Austria and enchants with a magnificent city center: the magnificent city square with Starhemberg castle, the Eferding "cathedral"... A Danube highlight! Incidentally, the city is part of the famous medieval Nibelungenlied.
Afterwards, you meander on quiet farm roads enjoyably through rural cultural landscape: fertile fields, vegetable cultivation, large farms, direct sales, wayside shrines,... – pure Eferding Basin idyll! Shortly before Wilhering, you plunge one last time into a rustic riverside floodplain forest. Then, at the Wilhering ferry dock, you get a splendid view of Ottensheim castle along with its market. The crossing with the cable ferry, the first went into operation here in 1871, is the final highlight even for technically less interested countryside folk.

Please observe the operating times of the Ottensheim cable bridge for the final crossing to Ottensheim. If it is not in operation, you can cross the Danube bank 2.2 km before the Wilhering ferry landing via the Ottensheim-Wilhering power plant and complete the loop.

The parish church with the "miraculous" Danube cross and the cot boat
The name of the village of Aschach is mentioned as early as 777 in the Kremsmünster monastery charter. The history of the parish church of Aschach can be traced back to the 14th century. There were already places of worship in Aschach before the parish constitution in the 11th century. Two churches are mentioned in the Schaunberger Urbar in 1371: the "chirchen", which is our parish church, and "sand Larentzen", which is the hospital and cemetery church.
Count Siegmund Schaunberger had a late Gothic building erected in 1490.
The rising masonry makes up the majority of the building fabric of today's parish church.
A dedicatory inscription carved in stone and dating from 1490 is walled in above the vestry door. It states that this chapel was consecrated in 1490, on the Tuesday before St Pancras Day, and that regular services were celebrated from the Thursday before St Urban's Day. Remarkably, this is one of the first church inscriptions in German and Gothic script.
The church was dedicated to St John the Baptist and Bishop Nicholas.
For a long time it was a branch church of the parish of Hartkirchen. It was not until 1784 that Emperor Josef II. Aschach was separated from the mother church and elevated to an independent parish. The baroqueisation of the late Gothic church had already begun before this. The baroque cupola was added as early as 1750.
Due to its proximity to the Danube, the building was repeatedly affected by floods and ice flooding. It often happened that the masses of water penetrated the church. Sometimes the water reached up to 1 metre above the pews. These disasters caused major damage to the masonry and woodwork, which meant that repairs were always necessary.
However, there was an event in 1693 that gave the church a beautiful additional inventory. In this year there was another flood. Two sailors discovered a heavy wooden cross with the crucified Christ painted on it and brought it ashore. The sickly Stefan Mitterbauer took care of the work of art and had it renovated. During this work, he became completely healthy. He associated his healing with the cross. As a result, it was given the name "Danube Cross" or "miraculous cross".
When it was fully restored in 1701 and given Baroque decorations, it was given its place above the high altar.
In 1789, another ice storm caused extensive damage to the parish church.
The inhabitants of Aschach asked the district office for financial support, but this was refused. A proposal was made to demolish the desolate old church and elevate the Laurentius Chapel to the status of a parish church. However, the people of Aschach firmly rejected this proposal. The new sacristy was built, the second gallery for the organ and singers was installed and the nave was remodelled with a great deal of effort and dedication.
In 1844, the parish priest had the so-called "Zugebäude" built on the north side of the church to protect it from possible ice floes. An altar and the Holy Sepulchre were placed in the additional space.
This transformed a narrow Gothic nave into a Baroque one.
Inside, the first thing you notice is the high altar. The painting, by an unknown Spanish master, shows the enthroned Mother of God with the two patron saints of the church, St John the Baptist and Bishop Nicholas, surrounded by three angels. The painting was donated by the patron saint, the Austrian ambassador in Madrid, Ferdinand Bonaventura Count Harrach.
A work of art from the 15th century can be seen in the chancel. It is a marble relief depicting Jesus on the Mount of Olives. As was customary at the time, it bears the coats of arms of important families.
Time has also left its mark on this church. It was therefore necessary to renovate and extend the church in this century. Prof Dr Clemens Holzmeister was recruited for this in 1973. He succeeded in fulfilling the requirements for the preservation of historical monuments, the preservation of the site and liturgical requirements in an excellent way.
In order to provide space for even more people, a breakthrough with an extension was made on the south side. In addition, the roof truss was repaired and the roof renewed, and the exterior façades and tower were replastered. On the outside facing the Danube, two frescoes commemorate the two patron saints of the church: St John the Baptist and Bishop Nicholas. The new windows were designed with antique glazing. The high altar had to be repainted and gilded. The side altars and organ were in need of restoration. Prof Dr Holzmeister designed the chandelier that adorns the church today. These and other renovations allow the church to shine in its current splendour. On 11 . December 1977, Auxiliary Bishop A. Wagner performed the ceremonial reopening and consecration.
In 1984, the sculptor Ägydius Gamsjäger created the "Kripperlboot". This hand-carved relief has transferred the Christmas story to the Danube. It can be seen in the church all year round.
he aforementioned Laurentius Chapel is located in the middle of the cemetery and was converted into a funeral parlour in 1987. The building structure and the entire rising masonry belong to the Romanesque period. It has long been suspected that the church actually has Roman roots, which could also be indicated by the patronage of St Laurence. Excavations carried out by the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments revealed thick, 2 metre-deep foundations made of hewn oauders, which were covered in traces of lime mortar. In the west wall, made of reddish granite blocks, there is a remarkable Gothic pointed arch portal. The high altar shows an altarpiece of St Laurentius.

Coveted giants from the Danube...
Of all the rivers in Europe, the Danube has the richest fish fauna. Cromagnon man was already fishing in the Danube around 10,000 years ago. Finds of simple fishing tackle prove this. From the Mesolithic onwards, fishing rods, nets and barges were added to the spear as fishing tools. Regular fishing was probably practised from the 35th century BC. At that time, the main fish were hawks and sturgeon. The housefish weighed up to 500 kg and was fished so heavily that its stocks declined sharply. Even the fishing restrictions from the 18th century could not stop its extinction. Even today, the Danube still harbours a rich fish fauna with the nase as the leading species.
Numerous aquatic creatures live in the Danube. One very special one is the female Danube. It's always good to have her on your side - the Danube legend "Vom Donauweibchen" tells the story of this creature.

Food, drink, sport, culture ...
The rest areas feature an exposed concrete column, which reminds of the Roman milestones, wears a Roman head that was created by the artist Miguel Horn and presents information about the region, Danube Cycle Path and the Romans. Additionally they encompass a five metre long bench, made out of stone and concrete, and a solid ground of Danube pebble stones.
The architecture is inspired by the design elements during Roman times.
The concept comes from a competition which was jointly organized with the University of Art and Design of Linz and won by the student Lukas Beltrame. An important partner during the construction of the sites was the “Bauakademie” in Steyregg, which produced with their trainees all mounting parts for the rest areas.
The rest areas consist of an exposed concrete column, reminiscent of a Roman milestone, bearing a Roman head created by artist Miguel Horn and containing information about the local community, the Danube cycle path and the Romans, as well as a 5 metre long rest bench made of concrete and stone and a paved floor made of Danube pebbles. The architecture is based on design elements from Roman times.
The design for the Roman rest areas was the result of a competition organised jointly with the University of Art and Design Linz and won by student Lukas Beltrame. An important partner in the construction of the squares is the construction academy in Steyregg, which produced all the built-in parts for the squares with its apprentices.
The plan of the castle is that of a false 'square', with a wide open inner courtyard that is embedded between the two story side wing and the ground level annexes added to the three story main building. The ground level annex on the right hand side has a central gate.
Garages spread from both directions of the gate. Opposite of the main building is a longitudinal complex that once housed the stables and stretches to the archway of the actual main entrance. The tower hall is the last remnant of the original portal tower.
The eastern wing links the portal with the main part of the building and was erected by Lukas von Hildebrandt in 1709. He also created the high altar in the castle´s chapel. The southern wall of the castle opens to the English park. A colonnade which is crowned by two-axial central risalites spreads into the tall foyer from which there are stairs leading to the upper story. Today, Aschach Castle is a private property.
This Castle is home to Starhemberg’s Princely Family Museum and to the Municipal Museum of Eferding, and is dubbed a "showcase of world history".
In 1142, the parish of Eferding was separated from Hartkirchen.
In 1451, construction began on behalf of Count Johann II von Schaunberg.
1466 "Beginning of the Lankhaus" Further construction dates up to 1497 can be seen on the portals, the parting arches and the vault.
In 1505, the building was completed in its current form, with the construction of the double-armed spiral staircase to the organ loft, which serves as a staircase to the choir, being a particular attraction. The local population also helped with the completion. Some servants and maids sacrificed their annual salary. The town experienced a great boom during this time. Most of the houses date from this period. There were 75 different trades.
In 1606, the tower of the parish church was destroyed by lightning and rebuilt.
The late Gothic building was baroqueised in many parts (side altars, pulpit, tower, sacristy) in the second half of the 17th century. The current neo-Gothic high altar dates back to 1890 and is a work from Ortisei in Val Gardena.

The THALHAMMERs - a place with a special history in the Danube region - is located at Feldkirchner Badesee, where the glistening water and the tranquillity of nature set the pace. What began in the 1970s as a small bathing buffet kiosk run by Maria and Hubert Thalhammer has developed into a popular year-round restaurant thanks to the commitment of their son Robert. For several decades, THALHAMMERs has been an indispensable part of the Danube region. In the heart of the Eferding Basin, a region known for its fertile soils, the restaurant's connection to its homeland can be felt in every carefully prepared dish. Fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs and seasonal asparagus from the surrounding area around Eferding are used in their dishes. This abundance of natural resources not only characterises the landscape, but also the cuisine at THALHAMMERs.
What makes THALHAMMERs so special is the variety of experiences it offers its guests: In summer, the restaurant opens up completely to the lake, so the beach area with its loungers and the new floating jetty bring a little Ibiza feeling to Upper Austria. The Wirtshaus is not only a meeting place for locals and cyclists, but also a place that brings the best of the region to the plate - homemade, regional and full of dedication.
For generations, Wirtshaus Wögerer has stood for passion for gastronomy and family commitment. Karl Wögerer - who took over the business from his father - and his son Christoph Wögerer are at the forefront. Christoph is the chef of the house and always endeavours to develop the culinary delights. You can tell that father and son not only look after their guests, but also look after the inn. For the family, the historic building is the centre of good food and years of tradition. What began as an inn back in 1868 was converted into a bakery for a short time by Karl's father, until Karl finally combined the two after he took over and opened an inn with its own bakery. While guests can dine in the restaurant, bread is still baked in the adjoining bakery - not only for the inn, but also for anyone who wants to take it home with them. The Wögerer family can seat around 270 guests, who can enjoy a varied menu ranging from classic specialities such as roast pork with a crispy vinegar and salt crust to home-baked bread. From homemade breadcrumbs made from coarse white breadcrumbs to first-class regional meat from the farmer or farmer's wife around the corner - quality is the top priority here. In addition to the many seasonal dishes that change every month, Christoph always tries to incorporate his own modern creations - including a particular highlight of the kitchen: the game burger. Whether you prefer hearty, savoury dishes or vegan food, there is something here for every taste - younger guests and regulars alike enjoy the modern-traditional mix of the inn.

The inn is located directly on the Danube Cycle Path R1 and is therefore a popular destination for cyclists and tourists. Popular excursion destinations for cycling or hiking tours are the Schloegen-Linz cycle route, the Schlösserrunde and the 6-Seen-Runde - all in the immediate vicinity.
