Wonderful peak bike ride from the European protected area Upper Danube valley to the panoramic view village of Pfarrkirchen in the Mühl district (840 m), the highest point of all Danube bike rounds! Breathtaking distant views to the Alps, an enjoyable descent through Mühlviertel farm country past the Mühlviertler Dom, ... reward you. Final highlight: boat trip through the Schlögen Danube loop.

Directions:Located in the deep gorge of the Upper Danube valley - at the Ranna mouth into the Danube - the lonely Rannamühl is the starting point for this wonderful peak bike tour. Initially, you warm up riding downstream along the broad Danube on quiet secondary roads. About 1.7 km after Niederranna, the 550-meter elevation climb starts! The first third leads in switchbacks through the shady mixed forest on the steep flank of the Danube gorge. At the mystical Marsbach Castle, once a feared robber baron nest, the toughest section is overcome. Then it continues up through the narrow Marsbach ravine, after which the landscape opens up - an initial sense of altitude creates a welcome feeling of success.
Now, lush meadows, fertile fields, scattered farming hamlets, small woods ... pure Mühlviertel rural idyll delight you! You climb gently on farm roads up to the ridge in Emmerstorf. Here a first view opens up over the village Hofkirchen in the center of a rolling high plateau. A hidden paradise, is the first thought. The relaxed ride with easy ups and downs to the village allows for recovery. In the charming village center, the large parish church, townhouses, village fountain, pillory ... tell of a long market history. A highlight: the plant labyrinth a little above the village. An old power place staged symbolically and surprisingly with a magnificent panoramic viewpoint! Up a natural field path it goes - partly steeper - to the next terrace. There, you ride easily on farm roads to Hamet. The last climb leads through ancient mixed mountain forest to the panoramic view village of Pfarrkirchen. At the forest edge above the parish church is the "peak" - a magnificent panoramic viewpoint (840 m). Congratulations, you are at the highest point of all Danube bike rounds!
Magnificent deep views make altitude feel real, and breathtaking views of the Alps imply boundless vastness. Simply incredible! Another reward: 2.4 km of pure downhill fun - in the rush of speed through natural mountain forest! After the Falkenstein state road, a farm road leads over a gentle forest ridge. Then a wide, hilly plateau with hidden ravines surprises. Lush meadows, fertile fields, small woods, traditional farming hamlets ... – pure Mühlviertel rural idyll! The short descent to Harrau is followed by a short climb back up to the gentle ridge. Now begins a 3.4 km enjoyment descent full of harmony into the charming rural village Niederkappel. Here is the cultural highlight of the round: the Mühlviertler Dom, the highest building of the Mühlviertel! The swift descent into the Daglesbach ravine is followed by the last long climb on the opposite slope. With a low gear, you ride comfortably through lonely farmland up to Ritzersdorf. Congratulations, from now on it goes downhill!
The next station is the historic market town Lembach. Here also a short detour to the nice marketplace is worthwhile. Now follows a delicacy: 6.2 km of downhill fun - through the shady mixed forests of the Kleine Mühl valley down into the Danube gorge! From Obermühl, you enjoy riding along the broad Danube - across the farming floodplain terrace Grafenau - upstream to the dock of the longitudinal ferry. The final highlight: the ride with the Danube longitudinal ferry right through the famous natural wonder "Schlögen Danube loop"! The deeply cut river changes its flow direction twice within a few kilometers by nearly 180°. Above Au, the bike ferry docks. The last kilometers you pedal along the mythic river out. A wonderful peak bike tour with a lot of landscape cinema – on land and on water!

The main part of this wonderful peak bike round uses quiet, paved (secondary) roads. Between Hofkirchen and Hamet, a 1.3 km long section runs over a steeper field path! Basic shifting technique is necessary for the long - partly steeper - climb. Basic braking technique is necessary for the long descent. Not very suitable for classic racing bikes (see "steeper field path").
Please note the ferry times of the longitudinal ferry through the Schlögen Danube loop. There is no land alternative for the gap closure!

While your gaze wanders over the sweeping, charming landscape of the hilly Danube region over a coffee, behind the scenes - in the bakery - a story is being written that combines craftsmanship, regional passion and family dedication. It is Gerhard and Catrin Bauer who make this place more than just a bakery and patisserie. The Panorama Café is all about enjoyment, close ties to the Danube region and dedication to craftsmanship.
In 2003, master baker and confectioner Gerhard Bauer took over the traditional business in Pfarrkirchen. Together with his partner Catrin, he is now the fourth generation to run the patisserie. Originally founded by Gerhard's parents in 1970, the business has developed over the decades into a panoramic café with breathtaking views of the Mühlviertel hills and the Danube region. In addition to the traditional bakery, Café Bauer has also made a name for itself as a patisserie - everything from homemade chocolates, light fruit tarts and the classic apple strudel is created here with great attention to detail. A particular speciality of the house is the Pfarrkirchner banana bomb, for which guests return time and time again. Those who come for the fresh baked goods will also find a varied selection: fresh bread every day and a wide range of pastries. Those with a sweet tooth can also look forward to high-quality, homemade ice cream - something Gerhard is proud to talk about. In addition to its day-to-day operations, Café Bauer also relies on its apprenticeship programme as another flagship. With highly motivated apprentices, they proudly contribute to the promotion of young talent in the retail, bakery and patisserie sectors.
The Panorama Café is not only known for its delicious baked goods, but also for the breathtaking view it offers its guests. The hilly Mühlviertel region stretches out from the panoramic terrace, gently sloping down to the Danube. Here, the beauty of Upper Austria can be savoured to the full - and with a full stomach. The view is not the only reminder of the region, as the patisserie attaches great importance to regional products such as eggs and organic rye, which are then used to make the popular Mühlviertel organic rye bread, for example.
Visitors particularly enjoy baking demonstrations, where they can look over the shoulder of master patissier Gerhard at close quarters. A visit to the café not only brings anticipation of a culinary experience, but is also the perfect opportunity to relax. From the panoramic terrace, you can enjoy the view of Pfarrkirchen and the surrounding area offers a variety of MTB, cycling and hiking tours right on the doorstep: from the Penzenstein-Runde and the Mühlviertler Dom-Runde to the Traumblickrunde or the Schmetterlingswanderweg. The Danube flows leisurely past the Aumüller family home in Obermühl. An old cider press standing outside gives an idea that the "national drink" of the Upper Austrians has a home within these walls. Erich Aumüller is one of those producers who have elevated cider from a simple thirst quencher for farmers working in the fields to the quality league of the absolute top beverages with inexhaustible passion and expertise. With inexhaustible passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality, he has catapulted himself into the ranks of the best cider producers in Upper Austria. Aumüller has been a member of the select ranks of "Mostsommeliers" since 2007. The family business has long been known for its top-quality musts and exquisite fruit juices, and the Aumüllers' pear musts in particular have repeatedly been among the state winners and the best musts in Austria. Erich Aumüller enjoys sharing his love of cider with guests. If you book in advance, he will show you around his "sanctuary" and present his top musts at tastings. But beware: once you have had a taste of the world of cider in a seminar with Erich Aumüller, you can easily become infected with the cider virus. Cure absolutely impossible.

Die Wiese, vom Menschen geschaffener Lebensraum ...
Wiesen sind mit einigen Ausnahmen vom Menschen geschaffene Lebensräume, die unter natürlichen Umständen allmählich verbuschen und in weiterer Folge verwalden würden. Im Laufe der Jahrtausende wurden die Wiesen aber zu wertvollen, artenreichen Lebensräumen, die es nun zu erhalten gilt. Besonders im oberen Donautal sind die Wiesen mit einem hohen Aufforstungsdruck bedroht, da sich die Bewirtschaftung an vielen Stellen scheinbar nicht mehr lohnt. Ein wertvoller Wiesentyp ist z.B. die Streuobstwiese, die traditionelle Form der Obstbaumbestände, die oft in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Bauernhäusern vorkommt. Die Bäume stehen in Reihen oder unregelmäßig, der Unterwuchs wird häufig als Weide genutzt. Sie stellt einen besonders artenreichen Lebensraum dar und beherbergt Insekten, Vogelarten, Säugetiere. Alte Baumhöhlen sind Brutplatz für viele Tierarten. Für den Menschen sind sie nicht nur Nahrungsquelle, sondern auch Verschönerer des Landschaftsbildes und Quelle der Erholung. Auch das eine oder andere gute Destillat und Most lassen sich in der Gegend erstehen.
In der Nähe von Grafenau gibt es den Jungfernsee - die Geschichte "Das steinerne Heu" erzählt, wie dieser See zu seinem Namen kam.
