Out and about on old tracks - impressive, family-friendly cycle tour on the route of the former Steyrtalbahn!
Let yourself be surprised and relax at the new rest areas, viewpoints, adventure stations and natural bathing spots along the Steyrtal cycle path between Grünburg and Klaus. This new cycle path really brings the Steyrtal to life! Breathtaking views of the gorge invite you to experience a unique river landscape.
With its bathing spots, rest areas, interactive stations, viewpoints and gorges, the R 8 family cycle path nestles close to the River Steyr - from Steyr in the north to St. Pankraz in the south. Thanks to the largely flat route, the Steyrtal cycle path is also ideal for families.
Directions:Steam locomotives once whizzed past here: the Untergrünburg to Klaus section of the trail follows the route of the Steyrtalbahn almost exactly. To the north, the trail can be extended to the town of Steyr. In a southerly direction, you can continue from St. Pankraz via the R 31 National Park Cycle Path to Windischgarsten or via the R 9 Hintergebirgsradweg to the connection to the R 7 Enns Cycle Path, which then ends back in Steyr. North of Klaus, the Steyrtal cycle path meets the R 10 Kremstal cycle path.
Alternative variants as a circular route The R 801 Molln circular route with the entry points Gasthaus Leonsteinerhof, Frauenstein junction and Klauser See leisure center leads through the natural landscape of Ramsau, past the Frauenstein pilgrimage church and Effertsbach, where the writer Marlen Haushofer grew up. This cycle trail is suitable for sporty cyclists or e-bikers. The R 802 Steinbach circular route with the starting points at the Steinbach museum footbridge and Haunoldmühle mill in Obergrünburg leads through the picturesque village of Steinbach/Steyr.
A detour to the interactive energy adventure trail with its many viewpoints and power stations is well worthwhile.
Facts:
Total distance: Steyr to St. Pankraz 55 km
Steyr to Grünburg: 20 km
Grünburg to Klaus: 24 km
Klaus to St. Pankraz: 11 km
A little tip!!! If you cycle the route "downstream" from south to north (from St. Pankraz to Steyr), you will benefit from the natural gradient.
National Park Pavilion
A particularly nice resting place along the cycle path in Leonstein at the Fürnkranz parking lot is the wooden pavilion - built by the Kalkalpen National Park. This is one of the entry points to the cycle path, which provides information about the Kalkalpen National Park and the Steyrtal Museum Railway. The rails laid there invite both children and adults to balance and the wooden train is the perfect play equipment for the little ones. There are plenty of parking spaces and a toilet at the newly designed parking lot. Viewing platform with gorge viewA breathtaking gorge view can be enjoyed at the top of the Steyrschlucht gorge in Leonstein shortly before/after crossing the main road. Secured by a viewing platform, you can enjoy the view into the Steyr canyon. Adventure stations To keep the cycle path varied for little cyclists too, small adventure stations invite them to play and guess from time to time. In Steinbach/Steyr in the Pieslwang district, for example, tricky questions on an oversized bandolo right next to the cycle path encourage children to solve puzzles. Don't worry! You can see whether you have chosen the right answers by looking at the right or wrong rope.
Stoa Mandl - school project
As part of a school project, pupils from the Neue Mittelschule Grünburg built so-called "Stoa Mandl" sculptures with stones from the Steyr River, which draw attention to various rest areas and adventure stations along the cycle path. New cycle map As part of the new staging of the cycle path, a new cycle map of the Steyrtal Cycle Path was also created. In addition to the exact route from Steyr to St. Pankraz, including the two new variants R801 and R802, it also contains lots of useful information for a cycle tour along the Steyrtal Cycle Path. The map is available free of charge from tourist information offices, bike rental points and the Molln National Park Center.

NEW - The Traunviertel Tour
This e-bike pleasure tour in 7 daily stages with approx. 450 km and approx. 5,000 m elevation gain also includes the Steyrtal cycle path. The route is well-marked and mostly follows regional cycle paths along rivers and waterways from Steyr and the Steyrtal valley via the Krems valley and the Almtal valley to Gmunden, continuing along the transition to the Alpine foothills to Bad Hall, via Wolfern and Steyr into the Enns valley and over the Reichraminger Hintergebirge mountains into the Pyhrn-Priel region and back to Steyr.Bike-friendly businessesQualified and labeled "bike-friendly businesses" guarantee a truly bike-friendly stay and are very concerned about bike-specific issues and needs.
