Windischgarsten

Windischgarsten, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The market town of Windischgarsten is the centre of the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region.

Historic manor houses and pretty shops are just as popular attractions as the wide range of cultural and leisure activities on offer.

What you're after...

The Erlebnisberg Wurbauerkogel in Windischgarsten offers fun, games and excitement all in one go! With the chairlift you can easily reach the mountain station, where the mountain restaurant already beckons with local delicacies. The glass National Park Panorama Tower Wurbauerkogel impresses with a view of the surrounding mountains - 21 two-thousand metre peaks included - and an exciting exhibition about the Limestone Alps National Park. If you haven't yet experienced a ride, you should hop on the Alpine Coaster, an all-weather Alpine rollercoaster, and speed through roundabouts, over jumps and waves. Speaking of speed: you can also let the wind whistle around your ears in the newly built bike park on Wurbauerkogel . Three mountain bike trails - a flow trail (easy), a freeride trail (medium) and a downhill trail (difficult) - are available. Those who prefer to roam through the undergrowth with bow and arrow can take aim at chamois, wolves and bears on the 3D archery course . Climbers, on the other hand, soar skywards in the Bannholzmauer via ferrata park . The striking rock tower, which rises majestically at the foot of the Wurbauerkogel, offers four via ferratas in difficulty levels A/B to D/E.

Culture at the highest level

The Kulturhaus Römerfeld in Windischgarsten - a multifunctional event centre - serves as a cultural meeting point on the one hand and can also be hired as a location for conferences and congresses on the other. In the winter months in Windischgarsten especially glittering ball nights provide unforgettable experiences. Events such as the traditional Lederhosentreffen are also an integral part of the cultural life of Windischgarsten without them.

"UNESCO cultural heritage Niglo parade"

Every year on 5 December, mysterious figures gather in Windischgarsten . They are getting ready for the Niglo parade, which only takes place here. This exclusivity even earned the procession, which was first described more than 150 years ago, an entry on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Many of the participating figures and their traditional costumes and masks can only be found here in the Garstner Valley. Fancy something really special? Then head to this historic Advent event!

Sports terrain

Whether outdoor or indoor pool, football pitch or beach volleyball court, skate park, tennis courts, asphalt tracks, climbing, paragliding or hang-gliding - the motto is: get fit. For winter sports fans, there are cross-country ski trails, ice skating and ice stock tracks or the nearby Skigebiet Wurzeralm and Skigebiet Hinterstoder to explore.

Away into the nightlife of Windischgarsten

Those who want to have fun late at night can do so in Windischgarsten's pubs and dance clubs. For example, there is plenty of partying in the hip "Altstadt", a music bar for the young and young at heart.
