MTB Route: Kranichsteg – Laudachtal – Schrattenbach – East Shore of Lake Laudach
Description: Due to urgent repair work on the forest road, the MTB trail will be closed from November 2nd through November 15th, 2026.
Although, based on the general operating hours, the MTB trail should no longer be open to riders at this time, we would like to share this information with all other visitors as well.

Mountain bike trail in the Traunsee-Almtal region of the Salzkammergut
From Kranichsteg through the Laudach Valley and along the Schrattenbach forest road to the eastern shore of Lake Laudach
From there, there are connecting routes toward Gmunden and Grünberg.
Go around Laudach Lake via the Ramsau Alm and continue to the Radmoos intersection. There, turn right and head downhill toward Franz im Holz, continuing on to Gmunden or back to Kranichsteg; turn slightly right toward Grünbergalm or slightly left toward Mitterweg to continue on to Gmunden.
Or follow the forest road toward Schrattenau (“roundabout”), turn right onto the first road, and follow the forest road toward Hauergraben; after the end barrier, continue on the road to the Traxenbichl district (ÖBB Traxenbichl stop)—connection to the Almtal Cycle Route R 11; turn left toward Scharnstein (turning right would take you toward Grünau im Almtal)

From November 1st to April 14th, it is not allowed to drive on the forest roads on this route, with the exception of the public roads!

Here's how to get to Kranichsteg in St. Konrad in the Salzkammergut:
We recommend traveling by public transportation!
By train:
Take the Salzkammergutbahn (Line 170) to Gmunden Station from Attnang-Puchheim or Bad Ischl.
Take the Almtalbahn (Line 153) from Wels Station to Scharnstein, getting off at Kothmühle or Traxenbichl
There are numerous connections at Wels or Attnang-Puchheim stations to mainline trains on the Westbahn line (Line 101) heading toward Linz/Vienna or Salzburg/Munich, as well as to Passau/Nuremberg.
Also via the Traunseetram (Line 161) – Gmunden Engelhof Station
Depending on the station, you can follow the bike path signs all the way to Kranichsteg or to the turnoff toward the Schrattenbach forest road.
By bus:
OÖVV Bus Line 535 Gmunden – St. Konrad – Scharnstein – Grünau im Almtal Station – very limited bike transport
By bike:
From Gmunden, follow the signage for the everyday bike paths of the Radstern Gmunden project to Kranichsteg or the turnoff.
From Scharnstein, take the R11 Almtal Cycle Path (coming from Wels) and follow the Traunviertel Tour signs toward Gmunden until you reach Kranichsteg or the turnoff.
At Kranichsteg, follow the MTB route signs
By car:
A1 West Autobahn: Vienna – Laakirchen West exit – B144 to the Gmunden East bypass – B120 toward Scharnstein to Kranichsteg
From Scharnstein or Almtal, take the B120 to Kranichsteg
From Bad Ischl, take the B145 to Gmunden—then continue on the B120 toward Scharnstein until you reach Kranichsteg
