In the silence of the walk across the Zeppezau to the Europakloster

The Peace Trail connects stunning natural landscapes with cultural and spiritual sites around Lake Wolfgang. The route leads from St. Gilgen, past the Gut Aich European Monastery, to the Fürberg boat dock.

The hike begins at the St. Gilgen boat dock. From there, the route follows the signs uphill through the residential area toward Obenaugut. Soon, a vast landscape of alpine pastures and meadows opens up, featuring gentle grazing lands and beautiful views of the surrounding nature.

At the end of Obenau, the trail leads back into the forest near an old farmstead. Following the forest path, you’ll reach a small mill by a stream. In earlier times, there were several mills along this watercourse, only a few of which remain today. After the forest section, the route passes through the Zeppezaualm, which is characterized by its species-rich wildflower meadows.

You’ll then reach Lake Krottensee. With the striking yellow Hüttenstein Castle and the Schafberg in the background, it’s one of the region’s most picturesque landscapes. Several benches with scenic views right on the shore invite you to linger. After a short stretch along Mondsee Straße, the signs lead on to the Europakloster Gut Aich.

The Europakloster Gut Aich was founded in 2004 as a Benedictine monastery. However, the Benedictine tradition in the Salzkammergut dates back some thousand years. Among the most famous Benedictines is Saint Wolfgang, after whom Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) was named.

The monastery features a lovingly designed monastery shop as well as an extensive herb garden, which was established and tended over many years by Father Pausch. The monastic community follows a way of life based on respect, freedom, and mutual appreciation. The monastery sees itself as a place of encounter and dialogue and is committed to the peaceful coexistence of individuals, groups, and communities.

The Peace Trail combines the experience of nature with reflections on the themes of dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. The varied route through meadows, forests, and cultural landscapes offers numerous opportunities to consciously appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings and discover the region’s unique features.

Finally, the route leads to the Fürberg boat dock, where the Peace Trail comes to an end. Right on the shore of Lake Wolfgang, you can enjoy the landscape and let the impressions of the hike sink in.
