You now hike beautifully through the forest to the left along the ridge: the path soon becomes narrower and you can repeatedly catch glimpses of Lake Lunz lying directly below you. Soon after a viewing point ("Seeblick"), the hike leads down to the right towards "Rehberg Nr. 19". You will soon reach a forest path that leads to the left along the slope. After a while, the path becomes a mule track and leads down to the Almgasthaus Rehberg.
Immediately behind it, turn left onto an asphalt road. After about 400 m, the road forks and you follow the small asphalt road to the right up to the Maiß farmstead - here you have another wonderful view of Lake Lunz. Go through the farmstead and immediately afterwards cross the meadow (or piste of the small Maißzinken ski area) on a field path until you reach the forest. Here the paths fork again: follow the right-hand hiking trail (then immediately right again) down through the forest in the direction of "Durchlaß" (no. 21). After a while, the hiking trail widens into a forest path and you continue descending (at a bench on the left around the corner) to the wide saddle or the wide valley "Durchlaß".
Pass an old lonely farmstead on the right and immediately afterwards turn left onto a field path towards "Maierhöfen" (No. 6). After a few meters, follow the smaller path straight ahead, which leads through the wide valley as a meadow path. You soon reach a forest path, which you follow slightly downhill to the right along the valley to the large valley of the Ois (= upper reaches of the Ybbs) (in between, the path narrows to a path for a few minutes). Here you come to a forest road, which is also a cycle path. Follow it to the right and cross the Ois over a bridge on the left behind a wooden house.
You are now in the hamlet of Langau-Maierhöfen: You now cross the country road "B 71 Zellerrain Straße" and follow the gravel road straight ahead until you reach an asphalt road again after 150 m. Turn left for about 100 m until you turn sharp right opposite the Pension am Lackenbach and follow a small road towards "Lackenhof" (No. 3 & 16). After about 50 m, turn left again towards "Lackenhof" (no. 3) onto a forest path (also a cycle path), which you follow for quite a while on the right above the bottom of the valley and the road towards Lackenhof. Behind a house you come to a crossroads: the right-hand path of the two straight ahead leads to Lackenhof. It soon becomes a beautiful forest and meadow path. Now several paths lead to Lackenhof: at the first fork, the Luchs Trail takes the left-hand (straight ahead) hiking trail and at the second fork (already within sight of Lackenhof church) the right-hand of the two hiking trails. This takes you to the church in Lackenhof and past the Kirchenwirt to Lindenplatz, your destination for this stage.

As part of the construction work on the Haus der Wildnis in the center of the market town of Lunz am See, a meeting zone was created around the parish church.
The newly paved network of paths connects old parts of the community, such as Lüftleck, with more recent buildings such as the two school buildings. The design of the large-format paving stones in light natural and gray tones is somewhat reminiscent of the rocks of the northern Limestone Alps, to which Lunz am See belongs.
The varied planting and simple furnishings of the traffic-calmed zone create several meeting points for outdoor events, cozy places to linger and a spacious parking area for cars, including electric charging stations. A functional fountain will quench the thirst of people and animals in the future.
The VOR bus route 640 in the direction of Waidhofen/Ybbs and bus route 655 in the direction of Scheibbs start from the new town center of Lunz am See. Several businesses in the immediate vicinity can be reached without barriers.

Handicraft museum in the Amonhaus
It all began in 2005 with an idea from the then - and now again - Deputy Mayor Johann Strohmayer and Elisabeth Honeder. The two were sitting together one day and got talking about a museum for handicrafts. That very evening, they asked Dr. Gudrun Malicky if she would be interested in working on such a project. Because Dr. Gudrun Malicky and Elisabeth Honeder share a love of needlework. The interviewee agreed, and so the foundation stone for the Lunz Handicraft Museum was laid.
Collection with more than 4,000 exhibits
The small museum has been open to visitors since July 2005. Over the past 15 years, our collection has grown to over 4,000 handicrafts.
Old library newly adapted
Embroidered christening gowns, crocheted lace and knitwear and much more are on display in the completely newly adapted rooms of the former library in the Amonhaus. The museum's collection also includes handicrafts that have almost been forgotten today, such as box strips and wall coverings.
For our annually changing exhibitions on specific themes, we are also happy to receive items on loan on the respective theme.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the museum!
The House of Wilderness in Lunz am See is the gateway to the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area and allows visitors to experience one of the last primeval forest areas in Europe. Born out of a commitment to conservation, research and awareness-raising, the modern visitor center combines nature education with innovative exhibition design. The recognition of the area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underlines its international importance.
Under the motto "Discover - Marvel - Understand", the exhibition takes visitors right into the fascinating world of wilderness. Interactive stations, virtual and augmented reality as well as multi-sensory experiences make the dynamics of primeval forest, wilderness and water accessible in an impressive way.
A particular highlight is the virtual flight as a hawk owl over the wilderness area, as well as the 180-degree cinema, which brings the Rothwald primeval forest to life through the changing seasons. Digital applications, models and haptic stations show how the forest has developed since the Ice Age and what hidden habitats can be found even in seemingly dead wood.
The House of Wilderness thus builds a unique bridge between strictly protected nature and interested visitors - an informative, emotional and barrier-free experience.
Listen to stories about the country and its people
The Eisenstraße listening chairs fascinate eyes and ears with exciting stories and impressive views. The special features of the landscape are described in the audio documents or contemporary witnesses have their say. The metal objects convey knowledge about the region that cannot be found in any travel guide.
The audio chair is embedded in the Amonpark, which can be found opposite the Amonhaus with its special sgraffito.
The Ötscher village of Lackenhof lies at 810 m above sea level in a side valley right at the foot of the Ötscher and is part of the "Hiking Village Gaming". It offers wonderful conditions for a vacation in the heart of nature all year round. In SUMMER, Lackenhof is the ideal place for connoisseurs and explorers. Well-marked hiking trails and mountain bike routes of all levels of difficulty lead around the Ötscher village.
In WINTER, the attractive ski area on the Ötscher offers everything families could wish for. From the Sunny Kids Park with magic carpet to black pistes. Ski schools and ski rental are available to our guests directly in Lackenhof. Away from the slopes, winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to 33 km of perfectly groomed cross-country ski trails, 12 km of winter hiking trails and 3 permanently signposted snowshoe hiking trails.
The mountaineering village of Lunz am See lies in the heart of the Mostviertel region. In addition to numerous hiking routes, the main attraction is Lower Austria's only natural lake with excellent water quality: Lake Lunz. If you like, you can take a guided tour of the Hammerherren or Handicraft Museum and learn about the long history of the village and the surrounding area.
But as soon as the sun is shining, it's time to get out, because the mountain is calling! There are more hiking destinations around the mountaineering village of Lunz am See than you can manage in a few days. In addition to mountain hikers and nature lovers, Lunz also has a lot to offer guests with an affinity for culture: the "Lunzer Seebühne" is unique in Austria - a multifunctional structure right on the lakeshore. During the day, it serves as a bathing island and diving platform. In the evening, the stepped seating cover is raised by water power and a covered grandstand with 250 seats offers a unique ambience for cultural events.
In winter, Lunz am See also has a lot to offer - when the ice cover is suitable, the lake invites you to enjoy a unique ice-skating experience. Skiing is almost as important in Lunz as our lake. Beautiful downhill runs of all levels of difficulty await you on the Maiszinken, after which traditional inns invite you to enjoy a cozy end to the day. Special highlights include the Sonnenalm cross-country ski trail and guided snowshoe hikes.
The parish church in Lunz am See is one of the most beautiful churches in the region - and is home to "Mary in the Golden Armchair".
Many special features characterize the Lunz parish church, which was built in the late 15th century as a two-nave hall church. Once a heavily frequented pilgrimage church on the way to Mariazell, the church underwent baroqueization and later neo-Gothicization. During revitalization work in 1952, the Gothic form was finally restored to its former glory. To this day, the church is visited by countless pilgrims and interested visitors.
There is no shortage of sights: Lunz am See parish church is one of the few European churches dedicated to the Three Wise Men. An impressive depiction on the right-hand high altar is dedicated to them. However, the most valuable showpiece of the parish church is the famous statue of Mary in an armchair: it was created by an unknown artist in the middle of the 15th century. It depicts the Mother of God holding the infant Jesus in her arms.
The historic church interior is very generously proportioned - and impresses with its particularly beautiful star-ribbed vaulting. The new altars were created by the Lunz sculptor Josef Ortner. The young folk altar and the new lectern were created by sculptor Adolf Hofmair.
Opening hours all year round by appointment
Every Thursday in the former Lackenhof elementary school, master carpenter Karl Teufel presents many tools from the carpentry and joinery trades, which were also used by the lumberjacks of the time. Various demonstrations show how these tools are still used productively today. The history of how the tools were made is also documented on various images.
In addition, the Ötscher bear and numerous other taxidermied native animals provide educational information from the world of fauna.
A special exhibition on "The cow as a draught animal" has been added to the museum "Old crafts - lived anew", which has now been in existence for 3 years.
A cow with an attached manure sledge in original size, many A3 pictures with cows and other carriages and their corresponding explanations have been presented with guided tours since November 2017.
The private museum has also been part of the Lower Austrian Iron Road Museums since 2019.

Use of the tobogganing meadow is free of charge and toilet facilities are located in the immediate vicinity. Plate and Zipfelbobs as well as toboggans can be hired directly on site at Sport 2000 and Intersport Ötscher in Lackenhof.
If there is enough snow, the toboggan run is open from December to the end of March and ensures carefree winter fun in the middle of the village. ❄️
