The PATH OF SALT leads from Altaussee and Bad Aussee via Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Ebensee, Gmunden, Stadl-Paura, Lambach, Wels, Linz, Rainbach im Mühlkreis and Bujanov to Budweis. The historical significance of this route can be seen in the horse-drawn railway stations "Engelhof" in Gmunden, "Kerschbaum" and "Bujanov" on the Czech section of the line, which are considered to be the oldest still existing railroad stations in continental Europe. These stations were built to transport salt
efficiently from the Kammergut to Bohemia.

Via the Traun-Pucking power station, the Way of St. James leads to the town of Ansfelden (birthplace and museum of Anton Bruckner) (km 8.3) and on to St. Florian (16.6 km). Legend has it that St. Florian was buried here. The Augustinian canons' monastery was founded here in the 11th century. The collegiate church with the Bruckner organ and the tomb of St. Florian, the imperial hall and the library are jewels of Austrian Baroque art. Anton Bruckner, the "Musician of God", worked as a choirboy, organist and teacher. He is buried in the monastery church. After 10 kilometers you reach the oldest town in Austria, Enns (km 26.6). In the Middle Ages, Enns was a wealthy town, as the striking town tower still attests today. Particularly worth seeing are the old town center with the castle, the town tower and the parish church, the Lauriacum Museum and the Basilica of St. Laurentius. From there, the tour leads to the salt harbor in the Enns suburb of Enghagen an der Donau (km 30.3), on to Au See (km 38.0), then through the Traun-Donau-Auen European nature reserve past the Weikerl lakes to Ebelsberg (km 50.8). There you can then turn back onto the WEG DES SALZES into Wiener Straße with the destination Südbahnhof.
