Description:

This circular route takes us from the center of Molln, first over the Steinköpfl, and then exclusively on forest roads around the High Trailing. There is also the possibility to climb the High Trailing.

Directions:

The route starts at the bus stop at the National Park Center in Molln. We go left towards Breitenau until we turn right into Denk-Hauptstraße. After half a kilometer, a path branches off to the right into the forest. First steeply up over wooden stairs, we soon reach the summit of the Steinköpfl. Then it goes immediately downhill again and back onto the street. Here we walk another half kilometer uphill on the street and then turn right onto the forest road, which we follow for the next 17 kilometers. At kilometer 8, we reach a junction where we can decide which path to take, as both paths reunite at the same point.

We take the right path and continue running. Slightly ascending and with wonderful views of the Molln Ramsau, we circle the High Trailing. At kilometer 8.9, there is the option to climb the High Trailing on a steep path through the forest. A path over a ridge leads directly to the summit cross with a magnificent view of the Alpine foothills. The actual summit with a small, simple cross is hidden a few meters further in the forest. The descent follows the same path. On the forest road, we follow the path to the left, past a beautiful hunting lodge, until we reach the junction again. We run to the right. Continuing on the forest road, past the Kreuzhuberalm, after exactly 20 kilometers we return to the asphalt road. Past a farm, we go down to the right and then through a short forest section below the Steinköpfl. Then it is only a few hundred meters to Molln.

Tip:

No catering options and no water points on the route.

Equipment:

The required equipment always depends on the respective route and the weather conditions. Regarding the provision of food: this is very individual, and it is advisable to have more rather than less equipment and food with you. For a 5km round in the valley, less is needed than for a demanding route in the mountains. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly moving or have to take a break, warming clothing is very important, for example.

Here is a general checklist for you:

  • Weather-appropriate running clothing for the respective season – weather forecast – region – altitude. This includes, among other things:
    * a waterproof rain jacket
    * waterproof rain pants suitable for running
    * gloves and warm headwear (cap/headband/neck tube)
    * sunglasses + sunscreen + headwear for very warm days

  • Trail running shoes

  • Water bottles, soft flasks, or a hydration bladder with enough fluid for the respective route (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)

  • Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,

  • Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest/a trail running backpack or a waist belt for small routes.

  • Dry pack: to keep your valuables or change of clothes dry (optionally a small trash bag)

  • Emergency blanket

  • Small first aid kit. In my opinion, an Israeli bandage is highly recommended: it is a one-hand operated wound and pressure bandage. You can find details here.

  • Emergency whistle (often integrated into the trail backpack)

  • Mobile phone

  • Maps (online and/or offline)

  • E-Card or insurance card

  • Some cash

  • Crampons/spikes: these can be very advantageous in winter and icy conditions.

  • Folding poles for trail running

  • Headlamp
