"The Book Trail" is a themed route linking cycling and hiking trails through four Austrian federal states. It starts at the Upper Austrian-Bavarian border near Schärding and leads to Agoritschach/Arnoldstein in the south of Carinthia. The route follows the old smuggling routes used centuries ago to transport Bibles and other Protestant writings from Germany to Austria and on to Slovenia.
The 29 daily stages are recommendations. In most cases, it is possible to complete shorter or longer daily stages individually. Many of the daily destinations are easily accessible by public transport and are suitable for the beginning or end of a hiking period of several days. In addition to practical information, the texts along the way also offer a cultural and historical walk through the history of the region and the people who live there. A Bible reading plan invites you to turn the trail into a very personal encounter with the Book of Books.
On the trail of the book smugglers through Austria - section from Ebensee to Bad Ischl The starting point is the town hall square at the municipal office, where you follow the course of the brine pipeline trail, the route of which is identical to that of the smuggling trail.
