For centuries, Steyr was the center of iron processing and iron trade. The once wealthy residents are still evidenced today by the beautiful townhouses at the town square. All architectural eras are represented: Renaissance meets Baroque, Gothic meets Rococo.
Directions:At the beginning of the route at the historic town square, you can admire the Bummerlhaus - a Gothic townhouse from the 13th century. Through the narrow alley, the path leads to Zwischenbrücken - a small square at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers, between the Enns and Steyr bridges. Here the city center ends, and up until the 19th century, the square was bounded by two mighty city gates.
On the other side of the river stands the Michaelerkirche - the former Jesuit church with two towers, which shapes the cityscape of Steyr with its elevated location at the mouth of the Steyr into the Enns.
The route continues to the Taborturm, existing since about 1480, on the Tabor hill. It was formerly part of the city fortifications and a watchtower for the fire brigade, today it houses a restaurant. From the Taborturm, the path leads past the Jewish cemetery to the Schnallentor, which was probably built in the first half of the 16th century as part of the city fortifications in Steyr in the area between Steyrdorf and Tabor.
Over the Schnallenberg and through Gleinkergasse the route now leads to the Museum Arbeitswelt and onwards to Schloss Lamberg. The path goes through Werndlpark past the Bruckner monument to the parish church - dedicated to Saint Giles and Saint Koloman, built in the 15th century in Gothic style and the most important sacred building in the city of Steyr.
Via the Pfarrstiege, the path leads back towards the old town to the city museum in the Innerberger Stadl, one of Austria's most modern city museums. The thematic focuses of the museum are the history of the bourgeoisie and the importance of the iron trade for the city of Steyr. From the city museum, it goes back to the starting point at the town square of Steyr.

Steyr's most important town house on the town square can be described as the most outstanding late Gothic building of its kind in Austria.
Stadtplatz 32, the town's landmark, is one of the best-preserved Gothic secular buildings in the country. Part of the building dates back to the 13th century. In the 19th century, the inn ‘Zum Goldenen Löwen’ was located here. The lion can still be seen today as a figurehead. Visitors to the pub found the lion too sweet and called it ‘Bummerl’ (= small, fat dog). Over time, the Bummerlwirtshaus became the Bummerlhaus.
Various choirs and brass bands from the region offer a Christmas atmosphere and a varied stage programme. A children's carousel, the Christmas aeroplane and the children's railway await younger visitors.
This high-quality Advent market for art, design and handicrafts takes place on two
levels in the atmospheric ambience of the Schlossgalerie Steyr.
The Steyrer Kripperl is one of the last remaining rod puppet theatres that is still performed. In 2018 the theatre was awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO.
The jocular anecdotes and songs are passed down orally and make fun of bourgeois society with wordplay and in song.
