From the station. Steady ascent from Großraming to the summit of Rotstein with a great view over Großraming and the surrounding mountains; return via a different route back to the starting point.
The route mostly follows forest roads through short patches of coniferous forest and the section to and from the summit follows a hiking path through a beech forest.
A nice, not too strenuous mountain route, with the summit very prominently visible from nearby at times. Great views over Großraming and the surrounding mountain peaks.
Directions:From the Großraming station, go left uphill to the street and then briefly hold right until a junction with a marked hiking trail towards Ennserhütte and Almkogel appears on the left. Turn off here in the indicated direction and run the asphalt section about 0.5 km uphill to the farmhouse.
At the farmhouse turn left onto the forest road and follow it winding uphill about 2.5 km. Then comes another left curve, where on the right stands a holiday cabin on the meadow – right in front of Rotstein, with a great view of the summit. After the curve, turn left onto the hiking trail through another wooded area – here the path is a bit bumpier than before.
Afterwards, you cross a meadow to the next forest road; at the bench with a cross between two trees turn right onto the path (from here Almkogel is visible) and after a short flat section more hiking trail signs appear – right uphill to Rotstein, a few meters further left down towards Ennserhütte and Almkogel. Here turn right steeply uphill. The path winds steeply uphill through the beech forest over many switchbacks until just before the summit to a junction – here turn right about 150 m to the summit.
Return to the junction and now continue straight ahead. This leads to a forest road; turn left first and then immediately right and follow downhill until the forest road leads to an asphalt road near a farm. Turn right towards Großraming, stay along the street by the stream. After the town sign, a house stands on the right; after this, turn right steeply uphill and after a left curve continue straight over a meadow path to the houses, here a small street down to the main road, turn left and then immediately right again to the station.
Tip:Enjoy the summit view of Großraming and the surrounding mountains :-)
Safety guidelines:The hiking path to the summit is very slippery when wet; in autumn, when there is a lot of leaf cover on the path, there is a risk of tripping and twisting ankles – stones and roots hidden under the leaves are not visible.
Equipment:The required equipment always depends on the respective route and the weather conditions. Regarding provisions: this is very individual, and it is advisable to have more rather than less with you in terms of equipment and food. A 5 km loop in the valley requires less than a demanding mountain route. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly moving or have to take a break, warming clothing is very important, for example.
Here is a general checklist for you:
Trail running shoes
Water bottles, soft flasks, or a hydration bladder with enough liquid for the respective route (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)
Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,
Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest / a trail running backpack or a waist belt for small routes.
Dry pack: to keep your valuables or spare clothes dry (optionally a small trash bag)
Emergency blanket
Small first aid kit. In my opinion, an Israeli bandage is highly recommended: it is a one-handed operated wound and pressure dressing. Details can be found here.
Emergency whistle (often integrated into the trail backpack)
Mobile phone
Map material (online and/or offline)
E-Card or insurance card
Some cash
Microspikes/spikes: these can be a great advantage in winter and on icy conditions.
Folding poles for trail running
Headlamp
