From the Mondsee in St. Lorenz up to the Almkogel is already a classic for hikers. This great variant adds a fun downhill and closes the circle at a running pace!
The Almkogel is probably the most beautiful panoramic mountain directly on Lake Mondsee. From St. Lorenz there is a fairly steep path up, which is also interesting for trail runners and can be done really well with poles. The same path back is not very runnable, which is why a fine alternative was chosen here, which descends back to Mondsee via extremely fun passages.
Directions:Right next to the Gasthof Drachenwand is a hiking sign which indicates the ascent to the Almkogel at the junction. Follow the path into the forest and up to the Theklakapelle chapel. Shortly afterwards, the path divides and we follow the steep ascent towards the Almkogel! Sticks and shoes with good grip are important here. The path continues to wind its way up a slope over many serpentines, with beautiful passages and great views. Once you reach the top, you can take a detour to the summit of the Almkogel, but beware: this is very busy and narrow on some days. The downhill is much less busy. This follows the mountains and lakes trail at the junction below the Almkogel. From the view of the ascent direction, follow the path straight down. After a few rocky sections, you reach a forest road which you immediately follow to the left. Soon afterwards we reach a junction in the direction of "Michlofen" which we follow downhill along forest paths.
Shortly before you reach the main road by the lake, you can turn left and walk a little further up the forest road before reaching it. The hiking trail along the road takes you directly back to the starting point.
Tip:If you want to climb the summit of the Almkogel, you should look for a day during the week if possible.
Safety guidelines:Caution and consideration are required on the steep ascent
