Long mountain, valley and lake hike on secondary and forest roads, marked hiking trails and a narrow, very "rooty" mountain path.
Today you cross a "real" summit for the first time, although partially forested, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of Fuschlsee, Schafberg and Dachstein. However, before the ascent you first hike along the southern shore of Fuschlsee to the well-known Schloss Fuschl and after descending from Filbling you reach the popular Faistenau holiday village on forest paths.
Directions:First, you walk along the village street out of the center of Fuschl am See – past the beach bath – to the bypass road. Before that, follow the signs of the Fuschlseerundweg, which now follows the southern shore of Fuschlsee. After the Brunnwirt (opposite the Red Bull headquarters) follow Austraße to the right and after a few steps turn right again and then walk past the Wesenauer bathing spot. On the left above you can see the forested Filbling with its distinctive summit meadow (you will cross this mountain ridge later in the route – but there is also a direct path going up, which on the left leads to the federal road, steeply to the small Filblingsee and above that right to the summit).
The lake circuit path now leads through forest slopes to the Stöllinger bathing spot (kiosk). A brief ascent to the left on the Fischerweg, then right on the lake circuit path, and across a bridge over the Hallbach, which flows into the lake. Continuing on the beautiful lake path to just before Schloss Fuschl in Hof near Salzburg. Then left on the access road up to the federal road (bus stop), which crosses to the Höfnerhäuser. 1:30 h
On the following forest road 200 m uphill, then right on a meadow path to a chapel. On a forest road you reach the 2.5 km long northwest ridge of the mountain, over which you climb quite directly to the summit. The trees, however, spread their roots over the path, so it can be quite slippery here after rain or when snow is present. The summit meadow on top of the Filbling (1,307 m) rewards all effort with a deep view of Fuschlsee and the sight of Schober, Dachstein and Schafberg; a bench under the cross invites you to stay. 2:00 h
Descent on the forested and just as "rooty" but steeper southeast ridge (still No. 40). Soon the direct path coming up from Fuschl merges (those who follow it downhill reach the small Filblingsee, completely surrounded by forest, after 10 minutes). The descent towards Faistenau leads briefly straight over the ridge (view to Untersberg and Osterhorn group), then sharply turns right and leads downwards on a wider track into the slope. Caution! After about 250 m you turn left – without signpost – onto an inconspicuous, narrow earth path that winds down through steep forest to the large meadow of the Sattelalm (990 m). Passing the alpine house on the left to a signpost, which you follow to the right towards "Faistenau" into the forest. There you turn right towards "Faistenau" (path No. 40/804). Now you hike on a path and soon on a forest road through the forest slopes under the Schmiedhorn into a ravine, where you turn left and go to Kühbergstraße. Follow this 500 m to the right until you turn left onto Krämerbichlweg. This leads you to Hinterseestraße, which you follow 50 m to the left. Then turn right and walk beside the access road and past the fire department into the center of Faistenau.
Tip:Note: Bus connection (line 150) from Fuschl to the junction at Schloss Fuschl. Or with the "Fuschlerin", an electrically powered wooden boat, across the lake to the castle fishery at Schloss Fuschl. First departure from Fuschl at 10:30 am.
Safety guidelines:For all stages you need hiking or mountain shoes with profile rubber soles as well as wind- and waterproof clothing.
Spare clothes for changing and a small first aid kit should also be in the backpack. How much provisions you pack depends on the number of refreshment opportunities. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
