Easy, almost flat and very scenic valley walk on side roads and a well-marked path.
Similar to stage 8, this stretch also leads through a flat valley – in this case along the Alm. The wonderful mountain river winds through a forested pre-alpine valley, where Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz once studied the life of greylag geese. Due to the comparatively short walking time, there may even be time left to visit the Cumberland Wildlife Park (circular route approx. 5 km).
Directions:From Jagersimmerl, the wonderful riverside trail "Enjoyment by the River" (No. 1) runs about 300 m beside the road downstream, then continues on a hiking trail just to the right. After 3 km you reach the parking lot in front of the Cumberland Wildlife Park (550 m).
Right next to it is the building of the Konrad Lorenz Research Station, newly opened in 2021, where research is also conducted on ravens and northern bald ibises. After just over 1 km, you hike on a left-branching side road along the river bank until you meet the Almsee road again. Veer 50 m right alongside it, then turn left and stroll through the settlement of Heckenau. Next to the Alm in the district of Rabenbrunn, past the Wanderruh guesthouse and soon on a path through the forest slopes above Reichenau to the edge of the mountaineers' village Grünau im Almtal (528 m). The train station is located at the village entrance on the left river bank, only 100 m from the path. 2:30 h
Tip:Note: Bus connection (line 533) Gmunden – Grünau im Almtal – Almsee; bus stop at the Grünau municipal office. Traunstein Taxi, route 60 from Grünau im Almtal train station to Almsee or Almtalerhaus – order at least 1 hour in advance (Tel. 050/4221691 or O-Taxi app).
Safety guidelines:For all stages you need hiking or mountain boots with profiled rubber soles as well as wind- and rainproof clothing.
Reserve clothes for changing and a small first aid kit should also be in the backpack. How much provisions you pack depends on the number of dining options. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when walking downhill.
