Alluvial canal path in the municipality of St. Oswald.
The Schwemmkanalweg is a unique circular hiking trail on the Austrian-Czech border, where history, culture and nature come together in a special way. 14 information boards along the route invite you to immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the alluvial canal, the border region and the people who once lived here.
The starting point is the village square of St. Oswald near Haslach. From there, you leave the village heading slightly uphill to the east and hike - together with the Steilstufenweg, small loop no. 70 - along a field path towards the forest. The path then descends somewhat more steeply to the main boundary stone directly on the alluvial canal.
Up the canal, the section of the alluvial canal with the steepest gradient is followed by the impressive steep step. After the rest area at Morau, you reach the former village of Asang. There, the steep gradient trail, small loop no. 70, branches off to the north, while the alluvial canal trail continues along the canal and crosses the state border into the Czech Republic.
At the "Luagmühle" station, it is possible to shorten the route (Schwemmkanalweg short route). To do this, follow the signs to the west on the left up to the former village of Untermarkschlag.
The long route of the Schwemmkanalweg continues along the canal to the European watershed at Rosenhügel. From there, take the forest road back to the St. Oswald border crossing and via the Reichenau monument back to the starting point at the village square.
