Schoberstein loop

Starting place: 4453 Ternberg
Destination: 4452 Ternberg

Short description:

This is the hammer in the land of hammers

The forest road from Trattenbach to Pfaffenboden is one of the steepest in Austria. Although the quarry area between Schoberstein, Gaisberg and Hochbuchberg certainly invites retreat, the inner downhill resistance is overcome: At a moderate pace, hikers don't have to fear kamikaze missiles, the Schreibach waterfall does not deserve to be rushed past, and a little training of fingertip sensitivity can do no harm before the last cart path to the old Messererdorf.

Description:

Trattenbach - Mösern - Hausbach - Molln - Dorngraben - Pfaffenboden - Trattenbach

Directions:

In Trattenbach at the Wallnermühle junction (information office), turn right past the mill and through the village, past the Messerer demonstration operation Löschenkohl, the museum and the chapel. After 1.3 km at the Drah Hütt'n snack station turn left towards "Gh. Klausriegler", cross the bridge and ascend in switchbacks. Turn left at the Oberpermesser farm and climb up to the Kienberg farms. After 1.0 km turn right, continue straight for another 420 m and pass the Hubertus chapel. After the topmost house take the gravel road into the forest. After 1.26 km turn right up the Schönbachgraben, continue straight for another 650 m and ascend above the Wendbachgraben. At the "In den Mösern" intersection (950 m) turn right towards "Molln" and over a saddle. After 780 m turn left downhill. Before the meadows of the Rosenegger Alm, sharply turn right towards "Maultrommelrunde, Molln, Steyrtal" and go down the cart path beside spruces and the Alm, passing by the Bilderstadel. Then begins a 430 m long pushing section (at the junction go straight towards "Breitenau"). On the lower meadow turn right and after 10 m turn left again (WW "Maultrommelrunde, Molln, Steyrtal"). To a shed, descend on the field path and after 820 m pass a house. Later descend left on the asphalt road past farms and through a wide hairpin bend into the valley of the Krummen Steyrling. Down (467 m) turn right on the Breitenauer road (downstream) towards Molln. From the Molln National Park Center head north through the Gstadt district to Gradau. At the Dornbach chapel turn right towards "Grünburger Hütte" and take the farm road into the Dorngraben. After 430 m continue on the gravel road, after another 300 m turn right uphill. At Pfaffenboden sharply turn left uphill to the Grünburger Hut (right to the Schobersteinhaus). With or without detour from Pfaffenboden follow the signs "Trattenbach" down the middle of the three forest roads turning left. After two switchbacks follows a descent section up to 32% (!) steep. After the Schreibachfall turn left downhill. After 150 m go straight. At a farm turn right down the cart path and over the Klausbach. After 610 m turn right onto the asphalt road, after 60 m sharply left and then down the gravel road up to 27% steep. At the end turn left on the asphalt road to Trattenbach and continue to the starting point.

Attention! From km 40.0 there is a 26% steep forest road descent. After the Schreibach waterfall follow two more demanding downhill sections – special caution!
