Path number: R11
Starting place: 4600 Wels
Destination: 4645 Grünau im Almtal
information: Temporäre Sperren auf Grund Instandhaltungsarbeiten an der Almtalbahn im Raum Scharnstein/Grünau im Almtal
Time period: 03.07.2026 - 06.09.2026

Description: Dear Guests!
Due to maintenance work and bridge renovations in the Almegg area within the municipalities of Scharnstein and Grünau im Almtal, the Almeggstraße may be closed for a few days at a time between July 13 and early September 2026.

We will do our best to provide as much notice as possible at the last minute!

This will also result in a rail replacement service on the Almtalbahn from July 11 through August 28, 2026, which will be operated by buses. As a result, bicycle transport will not be available during this period.

We appreciate your understanding!

diversion information: On days when the road is closed, traffic is rerouted locally via Traxenbichl and the Almsee Landesstraße to Grünau im Almtal.

The Almtal Bike Path leads you from Wels via Eberstalzell, Pettenbach and Scharnstein through Grünau in the Almtal to the final destination of Lake Alm.

Along the bike path, it’s worth stopping by one or two museums or attractions. For example, the Museum of Writing and Printing in the Bartlhaus in Pettenbach, right next to the train station. Or the Geyerhammer Scythe Museum, which features three original water-powered broad hammers and forges. Here, visitors can experience the working conditions and methods of scythe smiths through live demonstrations. Another worthwhile destination is the Austrian Crime Museum in the center of Scharnstein. Spread across more than 20 exhibition rooms in Scharnstein Castle, it documents the history of the Austrian justice and security systems from the late Middle Ages to the present day.

The route then passes through the district of Viechtwang along Almeggstraße toward Grünau im Almtal, past the Grünau im Almtal train station, where you’ll join the state road leading to Lake Almsee. You’ll cycle along the lake, passing the Cumberland Wildlife Park in Grünau. After the Jagersimmerl, you’ll pedal up one last hill before reaching Almsee.

Sections with heavier motorized traffic are marked with signs: Grünau to Almsee

Signage: R11 (part of the Upper Austria State Bicycle Route Network)

Note: There is also an alternative route for this bike tour, where you ride from Wels along the R4/R6 to Lambach, then past the power plant and through Bad Wimsbach-Neydharting, Vorchdorf, then take the R 13 from Einsiedling and join the R 11 in Pettenbach heading toward Almsee.

Accessibility / arrival

Whether for getting to and from your destination or for transfer segments along the bike tour, the train is an indispensable partner for cyclists. With the right information for planning, however, your next bike tour will be up and running in no time.

To reach the Almtal Bike Trail, take the train to Wels or Steinhaus. From there, the bike trail leads through the towns of Eberstallzell, Pettenbach, and Scharnstein into the inner Almtal valley to Grünau and on to Lake Almsee. With a constant view of the mountains, the bike trail winds its way along small side roads to the foot of the Totes Gebirge.

Bicycle transport is available on Almtalbahn trains. The bike trail (in the Wels city area, initially following the Traun Bike Trail No. 4 until the start of the Almtal Bike Trail No. 11) runs parallel to the railroad tracks between Wels and Steinhaus, as well as between Pettenbach and Grünau in the Almtal.

For group trips, dedicated bicycle cars are attached upon advance reservation by calling 05/1717. Info: www.ooevv.at
