The Alberfeldkogel is an excellent destination for hikers who want to enjoy an impressive view at the end of the tour.
The starting point is the mountain station of the Feuerkogel cable car. On hiking trail no. 835, which is initially even asphalted, you stroll past mountain inns and cross the eastern slope of the Heumahdgupf through a mountain pine alley. At the end of the Vorderes Edltal valley, the path divides. To the left, the hiking trail winds its way to the Helmeskogel (1633 m), passing numerous sinkholes along the way. For the Alberfeldkogel, however, keep to the right around the Heumahdgupf, crossing a number of mountain pine fields until you finally reach the viewing platform.
At the summit of the Alberfeldkogel is the 5m high European cross, which is made up of individual cubes with a stone from the respective EU member state in the centre.
This symbolises the equality and unity of the individual states in the European Union and the ties between the individual states. Each individual cube (state) must be stable enough to support the stability of the entire structure (Europe).
Walking time:
Mountain station - Alberfeldkogel - return: approx. 2 hours (4 km)
Circular hike:
Mountain station- Alberfeldkogel- Helmeskogel- mountain station: approx. 3 1/2 hours (approx. 7 km)
