Brine pipeline trail from Hallstatt over Bad Goisern to Bad Ischl

The Salzkammergut Brine Pipeline Trail leads along the oldest pipeline in the world from Hallstatt via Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl to Ebensee.

Starting at the Hallstättersee Lake it leads you through the Inneres Salzkammergut region with its lovely mountains and towns, and ends up at the Lake Traunsee. The trail follows the world’s oldest pipeline, which was established in 1607. In order to make the brine flow, the pipeline, as well as the path, slopes down slightly, and therefore the “Soleweg” is a rather light walk.

The 40 km long walk is split up in four 10 km long themed parts, each concentrating aspects of the locals’ lives. It starts in Hallstatt, the unique UNESCO World Heritage market-town, and takes it first stop in Bad Goisern. The lovely place used to be the “Monarchy’s prettiest town”, and still hasn’t lost any of its charm. Emperor Franz Joseph’s favourite town was Bad Ischl, the cultural and geographic centre of the Salzkammergut, where he and his wife Elisabeth regularly spent their summers. Ebensee is the destination of the walk. The Traun River, coming from the Hallstättersee Lake, flows into the Traunsee Lake and therefore is another crucial part of the salt transportation. Even today there are 2,000 tons of salt produced daily.
