Peilstein

Peilstein im Mühlviertel, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The charming village of Peilstein is situated on a hill in the Kleine Mühl valley in the north-west of the Mühlviertel region, close to the border with Bavaria. Wonderful hiking and themed trails with breathtaking views await you here! Few areas of Austria have remained as unspoilt as this wooded landscape. This is why people from the city like to seek peace and relaxation here. Nevertheless, guests do not have to do without a high-quality and varied holiday experience. The hiking routes Hochwaldweg, Dreiländerblickweg, Hochbühelweg and Vogelstimmenweg focus on water and lead to legendary places and magnificent viewpoints. The "Hemmerau" viewing point in Eschernhof offers a far-reaching view of the Bohemian Forest as far as the Czech Republic. The hike through the "Sausende Schlucht" gorge along the bird song trail is a real experience for the eyes and ears. The 6 accessible biotopes that have been created around Peilstein are definitely worth a visit. A wonderful market fountain and the pagan sacrificial site Kühstein are great attractions.

Worth seeing in Peilstein is the church (early classical period), which is dedicated to St. Ägidius and Leonhard. The organ was built by Nikolaus Rumel in 1798. The Rumel organ builders were successful in Upper Austria for two generations.

History:

The first documentary mention of Peilstein dates back to around 1200. A permanent pastor appears in Peilstein as early as 1444. In 1626, the village and church were burnt down by rebellious peasants during the Peasants' War, and a few years later the plague ravaged Peilstein. A letter of privilege issued by Emperor Joseph I in 1708 confirms that Peilstein is not a village but a market town. At the end of the 18th century, linen weaving flourished in Peilstein. Between 1814 and 1866, the village fell victim to several major fires, destroying large parts of the market town. In 1938, the two small communities of Kicking and Kirchbach are merged with the market town of Peilstein.
