Description: Due to forestry work, the circular route to the Bärenstein is currently closed and hiking is currently only possible in one direction.
Start at the Grünwald parking lot - from there follow the road towards Schöneben for about 380 m. Before the road turns into a forest road in the forest, turn right onto the hiking trail and follow the signs to the Bärenstein.
The path straight ahead from the Grünwald parking lot up to the Bärenstein is closed.
The partial road closure applies from 31.03.2026 until probably 30.05.2026, from Monday to Thursday all day and Friday only until 12:00 noon. The circular trail can be used normally at weekends and on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
The Bärenstein with its magnificent panoramic view of the South Bohemian Vltava Lake, to the founder's village of Oberplan, to the entire Bohemian Forest area and, with a good distant view, to the Alps, the rock formations of Hochbuchet and Liebesfelsen with beautiful views, Michael's Spring with Kneipp basin are the highlights of this hike.
0 km You start the hike at the Aigen-Schlägl market square (600 m elevation gain) in Waldgasse. The path leads north along the Höhenstraße for a few hundred meters. Turn off the road onto the forest path, past the mill wheel and on to the
1.8 km Michaelsquelle. The spring water flows directly from the spring. There is a Kneipp basin below. This treading massage basin is used for natural foot reflexology. (Please note that the Bärensteinrunde, the Waldsteig and the Mühltalblickweg are divided!) Take trail no. 41, cross the asphalt road at the Bitterkapelle chapel and follow the forest path past the Räuberhöhle cave. Take the short detour to the Liebesfelsen (a popular rendezvous and viewing point) and back again. Continue uphill to the
3.7 km Hochbuchet, magnificent view of the valley. In the documents of Schlägl Abbey it is reported that large pilgrimages took place here between 1762 and 1775. Further uphill to
4.5 km to Grünwald (926 m). Grünwald used to be a wood chopping settlement. In Grünwald, turn left onto the asphalt road. After approx. 200 m, turn off onto the field path. Now continue slightly uphill on the forest path to the
6.0 km Bärenstein (1077 m) - magnificent view of the Vltava reservoir. The Bohemian Massif was formed 300 million years ago. Rainwater seeping into the earth washed out underground fissures and caves, the granite blocks began to decompose and the round wool sack shapes were formed. Continue along the forest path moderately downhill to Grünwald. When you reach the parking lot, first turn right and then left again after approx. 40 m. Continue along path no. 41 until you reach the
8.2 km junction Bärensteinrunde "Aigen-Schlägl 3.3 km". If you walk downhill on this forest path, this is also the Falkensteinerweg (110) back to
11.5 km Aigen-Schlägl.
