... with iron and steel, salt and wood, water and power. Industry has shaped Upper Austria, and in turn, Upper Austria has shaped its industries. Blast furnaces, salt mining, looms and water wheels. *Peter Behrens (1868-1940), architect, painter, designer and typographer. A pioneer of modern industrial architecture. He, along with his partner Alexander Popp, designed the Tabakfabrik in Linz with its distinctive long horizontal windows, an exemplary building of industrial architecture in the 1920s and 1930s.
