Stift Waldhausen im Strudengau

Waldhausen im Strudengau, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Abbey grounds of the former Augustinian monastery with early baroque collegiate church on the Schlossberg.

Architecture - History

The foundation of the Augustinian canons' monastery is based on the deed of foundation dated May 16, 1147, in which Count Otto von Machland and his wife Jeutta von Peilstein donated parts of his extensive possessions in today's municipal area to the Säbnich monastery (high above the Danube near Sarmingstein). After his death (+ 1148), the Augustinian canons appointed by him move away from Säbnich (until 1161) and relocate the monastery to its current location, giving it the name "Silva Domus" - the house in the forest - Waldhausen.
