Roman Park Schlögen

Haibach ob der Donau, Oberösterreich, Österreich

History - Architecture
A leisurely stroll through Schlögen’s Roman Park takes you to all the places where you can enjoy nature, culture, and culinary delights. Relax on the hotel’s Danube terrace and imagine yourself 1,800 years ago, when Roman soldiers kept watch over the river from this very spot. While the little ones try their hand at being Romans at the Roman playground in the recreation area right next to the bathhouse, adults can learn about Roman bathing culture and relax on lounge chairs before continuing their walk. Roman sculptures guide the way, for example up to the famous Schlögener Danube Viewpoint. There, you can feel the true power and beauty of nature, and enjoy an almost fairy-tale-like view of the legendary Danube Gorge.

The history of the Roman Empire at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Donaulimes is fascinating. And it becomes even more exciting when brought to life through augmented reality. Modern technology is now breathing new life into the area between Passau and Schlögen. FollowSeverinus of Noricum to immerse yourself in the eventful history of the Danube Limes World Heritage Site and see what remains today. Explained in a straightforward, simple, and playful way—that’s what makes history truly fun!

The Fort
With an interior area of just 0.8 ha, the camp is classified as a small fort and was likely designed to accommodate a garrison of 100 to 150 men. A 1.65 m-thick defensive wall with a wooden parapet walk enclosed the rectangular complex. Analysis of the finds revealed that the fort was built around 170 AD and that the site remained in use well into the 5th century.

The Civilian Settlement
The small civilian settlement (vicus), which was located in the area of today’s campground, was established around 150 AD. The Roman vicus at Schlögen likely served as a roadside station as well as a landing and transshipment point for ships. The bathhouse occupied a central position in the settlement and was located directly next to the road.

Guided tour

On our hikes in Haibach ob der Donau with the "Naturwunda" Schlögener Donauschlinge, we follow in the footsteps of the Romans. Historical excavations, which are the focus of the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2018 "The Return of the Legion", give us an insight into their way of life. Their cultural and culinary heritage can be discovered not only in our everyday lives, but also in nature. We will get to know many special features of this unique habitat that are worth protecting. We will collect herbs for a culinary taste experience and learn that people are not the only ones who hike.
