St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee

St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The operetta "Das Weisse Rössl am Wolfgangsee" has made Lake Wolfgangsee famous far beyond the borders of the country with its feel-good melodies.

If you take a seat in the legendary hotel on the lakeshore today to enjoy a Melange and an apple strudel, you really do believe you are in a film set. Everything is just as you would imagine. And yet you have long since arrived in the 21st century.

St. Wolfgang on the Upper Austrian side of Lake Wolfgangsee is the smallest of the three towns. It nestles on the slopes of the striking Schafberg mountain, which can be seen from afar: the Schafbergbahn has been transporting day trippers up the 1,783 metre high panoramic mountain since 1893. Pilgrims have been coming to St. Wolfgang for much longer: in the Middle Ages, the town was considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe and was mentioned in the same breath as Rome. The ancient, eleven-kilometre-long "pilgrims' path" leads to the places of power where St. Wolfgang is said to have once worked.
