Franzensfeste: A Schubertiade
It became apparent that the Viennese song duo Die Strottern and the music band Franui would eventually dedicate a joint celebration to Franz, during a winter festival spring on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, where both ensembles shared the stage. “This is how it must have sounded when Schubert sang the Winterreise to his friends,” said the Franuis when the song by Die Strottern ended. “This is how it must have sounded when Schubert accompanied his friends at the dance in winter,” said Die Strottern as the Franuis approached the final chord. The plan to create a new Schubertiade was quickly formulated. Songs, choruses, dances – the entire program.
“Franzensfeste” is – aside from referring to the village near Innervillgraten in the Puster Valley – a special celebration for Franz, as true musicians call their Schubert.
“Franui's music is probably closest to that of Franz Schubert. Behind the fresh and rugged spontaneity of their interpretations lies meticulous attention to detail and sometimes a brilliant idea: for example, to play a waltz so slowly that time seems to turn around itself. Or comes to a complete standstill. When Klemens Lendl and David Müller perform Viennese songs, the same often occurs. With an incomparable sound and tone, they suspend time.”

“‘Gschichtldrucker’ and ‘Schmähführer’ are generally not regarded as compliments, but rather as their contemptuous opposite. But this is grossly unfair, a semantic failure! When someone adeptly translates witty humor and storytelling into word and musical action like the music band Franui and Die Strottern, what are seen as awkward traits suddenly become a life elixir.” — Tiroler Tageszeitung
