Hallstatt is the archaeological heart of the World Heritage region. The oldest salt mine in the world is located here. The historic town center exudes a unique flair with its promenade right on the shores of Lake Hallstatt.

The World Heritage town of Hallstatt

If you start at the beginning of Seestraße towards the town center, you will get your first beautiful view of Lake Hallstatt and the traditional houses in Hallstatt.

The market square in Hallstatt is certainly famous, as it has also been recreated in Asia, more precisely in China in the province of Guangdong. But it would be a mistake to end the tour of Hallstatt there. The ossuary next to the Catholic church is unique in the world and steeped in history. If you want to delve even deeper, visit the Hallstatt Museum.

Archaeology on the Salzberg

A must-do in Hallstatt is definitely a trip or hike up the Salzberg. Archaeological finds from the Hallstatt period and the oldest salt mine in the world await you there. The Hallstatt salt mine is still closed until summer 2026 due to construction work.

You will need a little more courage on the Skywalk and the Welterbeblick viewing platform, which is made entirely of glass and hovers 200 metres above Hallstatt. From here, you have a breathtaking view of the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut World Heritage region and Lake Hallstatt in the center. The Skywalk and the Welterbeblick viewing platform are still closed until summer 2026 due to construction work.

Hallstatt is not only culture and history, but also offers numerous nature experiences that should not be missed. Hiking trails lead to the waterfalls in the Echerntal, the Seewand via ferrata is one of the most difficult in all of Austria and the bike trails demand everything even from well-conditioned bikers.
