Karl-Markus Gauss
Karl-Markus Gauss, born in 1954, lives in Salzburg as a freelance writer. He has published nearly thirty books, which have been translated into many languages and have received numerous awards. His accolades include the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Political Book (1998), the Great Salzburg Art Prize (2009), the International Prize for Art and Culture from the Cultural Fund of the City of Salzburg (2013), and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art 1st Class (2019). In 2022, Gauss was awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding.

The majority of his books belong to two series: travel literature, in which he writes about small ethnic groups, forgotten personalities, and little-known regions of Europe, and journals, through which he has invented a unique genre between chronicle, autobiography, and cultural history.
