"Debut and Farewell - Piano Trios by Ludwig van Beethoven"
Beethoven200, Classical
The namesake of "TrioVanBeethoven" is exemplarily celebrated in this program: Beethoven's chamber music in its symphonically spectacular dimension. The composer begins his life's work with the publication of the Piano Trio Opus 1/No 1, and concludes his career as a pianist with the performance of his last piano trio, the "Archduke Trio." In this program, both epoch-making works are performed – thus, the TrioVanBeethoven spans the arc from debut to farewell! In between, as a musical treat: the cheerfully cheeky "Hit Trio."
Clemens Zeilinger: Piano
Verena Stourzh: Violin
Florian Berner: Cello

Piano Trio No. 4 B flat major, Op. 11 "Hit Trio"
Piano Trio No. 7 B major, Op. 97 "Archduke Trio"
Why "van Beethoven"? Beethoven stands for independence in thinking, for the revolutionary, for the transcending of his time. Thus, he is both a loner and a central basis for many future composition traditions that referred to him – like, for example, the axis from Brahms to Schoenberg.
Beethoven as a symbol of connectedness with the masters of the Viennese Classical era, but also as a visionary and vent for the new – this fits the "main theme" of the TrioVanBeethoven: The promotion of classical trio literature, but also commissioning works for premieres or crossover projects characterize its activities.
In its founding year 2011, the trio debuted at the renowned Tage der Alten Musik in Herne (Germany) and has since performed in many countries across Europe, in Canada and the USA, in China and Iran.
The ensemble has appeared, among others, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Bruckner Festival Linz, Carinthischer Sommer, Liszt Festival Raiding, Sommerklänge Grafenegg, Musikwochen Millstatt, Festwochen Gmunden, Haydn Festival Brühl (Germany), Festival "Musique & Neige" (Switzerland), in London Kings Place, Glasgow and Edinburgh (UK), at the Pazaislis Festival in Kaunas (Lithuania), Haydn Biennale in Mechelen (Belgium), Festival Nuova Consonanza in Rome (Italy), Festival Imago Sloveniae in Ljubljana (Slovenia), International Chamber Music Festival in Esbjerg (Denmark) and Festival Rencontres Musicales en Artois (France).
From 2014 to 2018, the TrioVanBeethoven organized a concert series at Schloss Kremsegg in Upper Austria, and since 2017, it has held a subscription cycle at MuTh in Vienna.
For the Austrian label Gramola, the trio has recorded all the piano trios by Ludwig van Beethoven on four CDs. The complete recording was awarded the Pasticciopreis by Radio Österreich 1 in 2017.
In 2018, a CD featuring Scottish, Irish, and Welsh folk song arrangements by Ludwig van Beethoven was also released by Gramola – with the Scottish singers Lorna Anderson, soprano, and Jamie MacDougall, tenor.
Clemens Zeilinger, 2011/12 "artist in residence" at the Brucknerhaus Linz, is among the leading pianists in Austria.
He won the 1st Prize at the European Youth Music Competition in Antwerp, was a prizewinner at the Beethoven Competition in Vienna and the European Chamber Music Competition in The Hague. As a soloist, he has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and the Orchestra of the Royal Academy London. He has performed in many countries across Europe, in the USA, Japan, Korea, Morocco, as well as in Iran and Oman.
In 2008, Clemens Zeilinger performed all of Ludwig van Beethoven's sonatas at the Brucknerhaus Linz, and in 2010, he focused on Schubert there with a dedicated cycle.
He teaches at the University of Music in Vienna and at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz.
Verena Stourzh was the violinist of the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt from 1998 to 2010 and has had an extensive concert career worldwide.
With the HTE, she has released around 45 CDs, including internationally acclaimed complete recordings of the piano trios by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as the world's first complete recording of all 429 Scottish songs by Joseph Haydn (with the Scottish singers Lorna Anderson, soprano, and Jamie MacDougall, tenor).
In the Haydn Year 2009, the Austrian National Bank provided her with a violin by Antonio Stradivari from 1714.
As a soloist, Verena Stourzh has performed with the Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Musikkollegium Winterthur as well as the Symphony Orchestra Brasilia.
Verena Stourzh plays violins by Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi from 1770 and Patrick Robin from 2003.
