"At the Threshold of Romanticism: Beethoven - Schubert"

Beethoven200, Classical

“Beethoven's music... awakens that infinite longing which is the essence of romanticism. He is therefore a purely romantic composer.” This is how E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote about the "Ghost Trio." Even more romantic, almost like Schubert, sounds Beethoven's very last composition for piano trio, the short Allegretto in B major, thus bridging to the "true" romantic Schubert with his B major trio. Two key works at the threshold of romanticism, interpreted by the Swiss Piano Trio, which FonoForum described as: “This is how chamber music of the highest class sounds.”

Andrea Golubeva: Violin
Franz Ortner: Cello
Martin Lucas Staub: Piano

Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Trio in D major, op. 70, No. 1 "Ghost Trio"

Ludwig van Beethoven: Allegretto in B major, WoO39

Franz Schubert: Piano Trio in B major, op. 99

The Swiss Piano Trio has built a remarkable reputation in the music world and among audiences since its founding in 1998, recognized as an ensemble of extraordinary homogeneity and technical perfection, whose interpretations captivate with great emotionality and orchestral sound. It is no surprise that the ensemble was described in the US magazine Fanfare as “one of the very top piano trio ensembles on today’s stage” .

Significant competition successes laid the foundation for a global concert activity of the Swiss Piano Trio. The ensemble won the 1st prize at the Austrian Johannes Brahms Competition in 2005 after previously winning the 1st prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanissetta in 2003. In 2005, the trio received the Swiss Ambassador’s Award at Wigmore Hall London. The Swiss Piano Trio received important artistic impulses from Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio, the Vienna Altenberg Trio, Trio di Milano, Valentin Berlinsky of the Borodin Quartet Moscow, and from members of the Amadeus Quartet.

The Swiss Piano Trio has performed numerous successful concerts in 45 countries on all continents. The ensemble has played in prestigious concert halls such as Tonhalle Zurich, Victoria Hall Geneva, KKL Lucerne, Wigmore Hall London, Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Megaron - the Athens Concert Hall, Teatro Teresa Carreño Caracas, Izumi Hall Osaka, Shanghai Grand Theater, National Center for the Performing Arts Beijing, QPAC Brisbane, Teatro Coliseo Buenos Aires, and many others, and is regularly invited to internationally renowned festivals such as the Ottawa Chamberfest, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Kuhmo Chamber Music, Esbjerg Chamber Music Festival, Båstad Chamber Music Festival, the Chamber Music Festival at Schloss Laudon in Vienna, Festival of the Sound or MusicFest Vancouver. In performances of various triple concertos, the Swiss Piano Trio collaborates with orchestras worldwide, including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra, the Athens State Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Bern Symphony Orchestra, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica Municipal Caracas, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Queensland Orchestra in Brisbane. The ensemble has played with conductors such as Thomas Zehetmair, Mario Venzago, Johannes Fritzsch, Loukas Karytinos, Pascal Rophé, among others. Furthermore, the ensemble conducts masterclasses in various countries.

Numerous radio, television, and CD recordings document the artistic work of the ensemble, including at Swiss Radio DRS, Radio Suisse Romande, Swiss Television, Southwestern German Broadcasting SWR, Radio Television Hong Kong, Australian Radio ABC Classic, and CBC Radio-Canada. Additionally, there are CD recordings featuring works by Mozart, Dvořák, as well as piano trios by Swiss composers Paul Juon, Frank Martin, and Daniel Schnyder. Since 2011, the Swiss Piano Trio has been releasing its recordings on the label audite, where all piano trios by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Robert and Clara Schumann, and world premiere recordings of previously unknown romantic piano trios by Eduard Franck have been released. All these recordings have received enthusiastic reviews and awards in the international music press. Recently, the six-part edition of all works for piano trio by Beethoven was completed, which also includes the triple concerto together with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra as well as Beethoven's own arrangement of the second symphony for piano trio. This complete recording has already received multiple awards.

The ensemble is also vigorously committed to contemporary Swiss music. In addition to regularly performing works by Swiss composers, the Swiss Piano Trio has commissioned compositions from Martin Wettstein (Mystical Dances 2004), Daniel Schnyder (Triple Concerto 2007, Teufelsbrücke 2018), Francesco Hoch (Trio ISCHIA 2009), Florian Walser (Triple Schottisch 2017), Martin Schlumpf (Time Traces 2018), Richard Dubugnon (Round Dance 2022, Triple Concerto "Carmeniana" 2025), and Matthias Roth (remembers 2023).
