An exciting and adventurous journey to the last boundaries that no musician has entered before …

New directions in music are currently trending under creative names, with the fusion and crossover categories being continuously expanded. However, the classically trained Janoska Ensemble transcends all boundaries with its polyglot musical language. Their debut CD, which achieved gold status within a few months, aptly titled JANOSKA STYLE (Deutsche Grammophon 2016). Their 2019 album REVOLUTION was also awarded gold. In 2022, THE BIG B’s followed, on track to repeat this success. Their latest work, THE FOUR SEASONS IN JANOSKA STYLE, was released in October 2024 and has already been celebrated with great acclaim.

Summarizing the special quality of the Janoska arrangements in a few words is no easy task: They are parallel incursions into classical terrain and far-off lands of the musical repertoire, where the musicians unleash their spontaneous creativity to create first-class, innovative, captivating music that lives and breathes. These uniquely audience-friendly transformations are the work of the three brothers from Bratislava – Ondrej and Roman Janoska on violins and František Janoska on piano – along with their brother-in-law Julius Darvas, born in Constance, on double bass. The two families share a long tradition of musical excellence. The Janoskas have been making music for six generations, while Julius Darvas builds on three or more generations of double bass playing. Another quality that connects the ensemble members is a top-notch classical education and award-winning solo performances. In recognition of their outstanding musical achievements, the ensemble was awarded the Slovak National Prize, the "Crystal Wing Award", in 2023.

The original compositions that selectively enrich their programs, often with telling titles, serve as emotional business cards illuminating the personalities of these outstanding artists. In their own style, the four musicians express their love for improvisation with passionate dedication and perfected virtuosity, rewarded with thunderous applause from discerning audiences across four continents. The Janoska Ensemble is – in pop jargon – a "live band." The emotional intelligence and subtle humor of the artists' interaction with the audience, combined with their masterfully staged performances of familiar melodies and surprise effects in newly created music pieces, reliably lift listeners from their seats, often leading to enthusiastic standing ovations.

The ensemble performs worldwide in prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, the Vienna Musikverein, and the Vienna Concert House, and has toured in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the USA. Their orchestral projects include performances with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, along with collaborations with the Tonkünstler Orchestra. Artistic partners include El?na Garan?a, Rolando Villazón, Richard Galliano, and Michel Camilo, among others.

Despite a busy schedule of engagements and tours, the Janoska Ensemble conveys an inexhaustible passion for making music. The four musicians are constantly working on new programs and projects. Their unique "Janoska Style" forms the basis for everything to come and serves as the quality seal for one of the most exciting and versatile music ensembles of our time.

Janoska Style: Each piece of music is a unique creation, born from the magic of the moment.

It takes more than a sentence to describe what exactly defines the Janoska Style – merely listing all its biographical and artistic components would take too long and would not do it justice. But what is it exactly? Classical works in new arrangements, influences reaching into contemporary music! A central element is the lost art of improvisation, especially in reference to classical music. The Janoska Ensemble creates new, unprecedented synergies, bridging the original and its modern interpretation paired with a fusion of improvisation and creativity: in short: the Janoska Style.

The four members of the Janoska Ensemble fully meet all criteria of the “Janoska Style”: a solid classical education, decades of playing experience from childhood, a deeply rooted musical tradition, highest technical perfection, and a deep joy in playing and performing, including the art of free improvisation. All of this makes the ensemble more than the sum of its parts; rather, it is a kind of perfectly balanced musical family.

The man on double bass, Julius Darvas, also acts as the program moderator. He describes the “Janoska Effect”, as he refers to the interplay during a concert, as follows: “The mood of the audience directly influences our joy of playing, especially when it comes to improvisation: We give – we receive – we give more – we receive more… And it just goes on. Then the energy in the concert hall really begins to circulate!”

The Janoska Ensemble is also on a sort of continuous “improvisation mission” through workshops and masterclasses: This teaching activity has taken the four musicians to places like the Kronberg Academy or the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. The responses from course participants were overwhelmingly enthusiastic: collaborating with the Janoska Ensemble – as their general opinion goes – gave them much more confidence to improvise freely in a classical context.

-Ondrej Janoska plays a violin by Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi from 1760, kindly provided by the Goh Family Collection.

-Roman Janoska plays a Ferdinandus Gagliano Filius, Nicolai fecit Neap. 1769, a generous loan from the collection of Dr. Christian Kuhn.

-František Janoska is a Bösendorfer artist.

-Julius Darvas, Roman Janoska, and Ondrej Janoska are Thomastik-Infeld artists.

“The virtuoso sweat flowed, the music raced across the genre boundaries of folklore, classical, jazz, and standing violinism.”
