There are true life stories that sound as if they were invented: The author Michael Köhlmeier has tracked them down and compiled a colorful panorama of outstanding individuals from various walks of life. His modern hero sagas are factually accurate but literarily free in formulation. About genius and madness, about life lies and moments of glory: These are stories that will enthrall you.

Here are some of these heroes:

– Thelonious Monk, who went to prison for his best friend

– Bob Dylan & Bobby Fischer and how the chess duel of these giants came to be

– Django Reinhardt, the brilliant guitarist who created his unmistakable style out of necessity

– Abebe Bikila, who ran 42.195km barefoot

– John Glenn, the astronaut who had to manually control the landing after entering the Earth's atmosphere

– Reinhold Bilgeri, Michael Köhlmeier's best friend with untapped primordial forces

Musically, Michael Köhlmeier is accompanied by jazz pianist Martin Gasselsberger and saxophonist Klaus Dickbauer. Like few others, they have the ability to musically respond to the emotional states of the texts being read, partly improvised spontaneously, partly composed, and always in the unique sound of this internationally highly regarded duo.

Michael Köhlmeier
Michael Köhlmeier studied German studies and political science in Marburg as well as mathematics and philosophy in Giessen and Frankfurt. He has received numerous awards for his books, including the Johann-Peter-Hebel Prize, the Manès-Sperber Prize, the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art I. Class, and most recently the Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz Prize for his body of work and the Ferdinand-Berger Prize for his political engagement. Michael Köhlmeier is married to the writer Monika Helfer and lives in Hohenems and Vienna.

Klaus Dickbauer
Klaus Dickbauer studied clarinet in Linz and Salzburg as well as saxophone in Vienna and Berkley (USA). From 1990-2005 he was a member of the “Vienna Art Orchestra”, since then he has toured among others with his trio “Triple Ay”, the duo with Martin Gasselsberger, and the legendary saxophone quartet “Saxofour”. He has published numerous instructional works with Universal Edition as an author and, together with Martin Gasselsberger, developed the play-along app “Chordmill”. From 1991 to 2023, Klaus Dickbauer taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and was awarded the Hans Koller Prize (“Musician of the Year”) in 2003.

Martin Gasselsberger
Martin Gasselsberger teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna at the Institute of Popular Music and works as a freelance pianist, arranger, and composer far beyond the country's borders. In his career, he has recorded over 60 CDs, and his music has been broadcast on radio in Canada, Japan, Australia, and most European countries. His concerts have taken him to China and Nepal, and he has been named Austria's Jazz Musician of the Year twice by the music magazine Concerto due to his artistic rise.
