The Singphoniker belong to the small circle of the few vocal ensembles active worldwide – and this for over 40 years. In an impressive way, the voice and artistic individuality of each individual merge into a distinctive sound body.
The Singphoniker master an enormous repertoire with confidence: With Gregorian chants, they evoke the mystique and spirituality of the Middle Ages. Madrigals of the Renaissance become miniature images of vibrant life in the 16th century. The heartfelt emotional world of Romanticism can be experienced in the songs of Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, and Robert Schumann. The cheeky-frivolous feeling of the "Golden Twenties" becomes palpable in the hits of the Comedian Harmonists. Without a microphone, they give jazz and pop songs an irresistible swing and groove using only body and voice. Their interpretations of contemporary vocal music enchant with fascinating sound quality and immediate naturalness. Thus, the Singphoniker succeed in combining different music styles into an exciting new unity in their concerts – always sung with style and never trivial. The inclusion of the piano in all musical styles and epochs further sharpens the artistic profile and distinctiveness of the ensemble.
Numerous awards and honors and the fruitful partnership with many renowned artists – including Gert Westphal, Ute Lemper, or Angelika Kirchschlager – testify to the reputation of the Singphoniker. They also regularly collaborate with international orchestras (e.g., Orquesta Nacional de España, Munich Radio Orchestra, NDR Radio Philharmonic Hanover, Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, or Orchestre national Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon) and conductors (including Sir Lawrence Foster, Paul Daniel, Ulf Schirmer, Howard Griffiths). In recent years, the Singphoniker have regularly performed at significant concert series and festivals in Germany, Europe, Asia, and America. Approximately 40 award-winning CD recordings document the special quality as well as the stylistic diversity and artistic flexibility of the ensemble. The ensemble owes many exciting contributions to the repertoire to a number of renowned contemporary composers. They celebrate great successes with Enjott Schneider's song cycles, most recently "Chatroom" based on texts from the World Wide Web, as well as with Wilfried Hiller's church opera "Augustinus," premiered in Munich in 2005.
The Singphoniker are repeatedly credited with seemingly effortlessly mastering the art of giving lightness weight and presenting heaviness with ease. Their unique ensemble sound is considered warm, finely balanced, and powerfully cohesive. From the deepest darkness to the brightest light, all facets of the male voice merge into a homogeneous whole. Their joy and dedication to music immediately resonate with the audience: A musical pull that touches and captivates.
“A celebration of voices and ensemble sound, carried by a shared heartbeat” — FONO FORUM, COLOGNE
