With the special exhibition “Private Collection Salzburg” the Galerie Badstraße 9 in Bad Schallerbach opens a private art collection to the public for the first time. From October 1, 2026 to December 5, 2026 13 works from six decades of painting will be displayed – complemented by current works by Mike Büchel.
A collection always tells two stories: the story of the works and the story of the people who have gathered them over the years. In Bad Schallerbach, what usually remains behind closed doors becomes visible – a personal selection that ranges from the surrealism of the post-war era to large-format contemporary painting.
Six Decades of Painting
The temporal arc of the exhibition is framed by Edgar Jene, whose “Les portes de la mer” from 1950 is the oldest work in the collection. Four works by the surrealist show how his visual language developed into the late 1960s. At the other end are the large-format paintings by Terry Rodgers, who depicts people between intimacy, staging, and distance in “Illusion knows no bounds” (2015) and “The Paradox of Knowledge” (2010).
In between unfolds the entire range of the collection: the realistic-alienated imagery of Martin Schnur, the silent diptychs by Manfred Bockelmann, the self-portrait by Clemens Kraus, the color spaces of Blanca Regl, the restrained figures of Bertram Hasenauer and the material still lifes by Willi Kissmer, including “Scheherazade” – the only work in the collection on wood.
In Dialogue with the Present
As with every exhibition at the gallery, Mike Büchel is also represented. With his “Self-Portrait” and the work “Echos,” he enters into a dialogue with the collected positions – a conversation between yesterday and today, between personal passion and current creation.
This results in an exhibition that is not confined to a specific style, but shows how a personal collection grows: from encounters, from conviction, and from the joy of the gaze that lingers long on an image.
The Galerie Badstraße 9 cordially invites you to discover the “Private Collection Salzburg” and to personally experience art from six decades.
