Against all odds, Tessa Ensler, the working-class girl, becomes a successful criminal defense attorney who, among other things, represents men on trial for sexual assault. She believes in the law, believes in the legal system, and champions the presumption of innocence. When in doubt, give the defendant the benefit of the doubt.

Then something happens that shatters everything she believed in. She becomes the victim. From defense attorney to prosecutor. She must learn firsthand that women’s experiences of sexual violence do not fit into the male-dominated justice system.
