Counter & Strings: Alois Mühlbacher & Spring String Quartet

Since its founding in 1997, the Upper Austrian “Spring String Quartet” has been one of Europe’s leading classical-crossover string quartets, shattering all the usual clichés about “violin music” and redefining the artistic expressive possibilities of the classical string quartet.

The vocal range “countertenor” is usually associated with heroic roles in Handel’s operas, with Bach’s Passions, and indeed with Baroque music performed in a historically informed manner—but much less so with art song or folk music.

In rock and pop music, men often sing in this high register, but with a completely different vocal technique. Alois Mühlbacher, who already caused a sensation as a soloist with the St. Florian Boys’ Choir through his internationally acclaimed recordings, continues to demonstrate—now as an adult countertenor—that he has something extraordinary to offer across all musical styles.

He is an internationally sought-after soloist in the field of Baroque music in both opera and concert settings, but also gives recitals featuring Romantic and modern repertoire.
