The Schlägler Forestry Operation

The abbey’s holdings include approximately 6,500 hectares of forest. The majority is located in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Forest and came into the abbey’s possession in several stages. The forests of Schlägl Abbey have been sustainably managed since the mid-1960s and converted into permanent forests: By harvesting individual large trees, the even-aged forests are transformed into selection forests. But what does all this mean? And how did the abbey come to own its forests? And what has changed since the abbey’s founding in the 13th century? Immerse yourself in the abbey’s green history—the tour takes you on a vivid journey through various parts of the abbey’s forests: from the Bavarian floodplain to the Plöckenstein. A leisurely lunch at the Gasthaus zum Überleben rounds out the tour. For those who particularly enjoy being active, there’s the option to hike part of the route under the guidance of H. Ewald Nathanael!
