From Thursday through Sunday, Lake Attersee will be all about the challenging sport of Dragon sailing: The Union-Yacht-Club Attersee invites you to the Austrian National Dragon Championship—a top-tier regatta that attracts sailors from both Austria and abroad.
So far, 28 boats with a total of 87 sailors have registered. Over four days of racing, they will compete for the title. While international guests are eligible to race, only all-Austrian teams will compete for the prestigious title of “2026 Austrian National Champion in the Dragon Class.”
The Dragon class was designed in 1929 by Norwegian designer Johan Anker. His goal was to create a fast, elegant, and seaworthy keelboat with an open cockpit—ideal for coastal waters. From 1948 to 1972, the Dragon was an Olympic boat class. It is sailed by a three-person crew, which requires tactical finesse, precise teamwork, and technical skill. To this day, the class has maintained its firm place in international regatta racing and is considered a symbol of stylish sailing at the highest level.
At last year’s Dragon National Championship, the Portuguese team—comprising Michael Zankel (CNC), Diogo Preina, and Joan Rosa—secured the title of “2025 International Champion of Austria in the Dragon Class.” The national championship title was won by Peter Resch (UYCAs), Justin Kurz (UYCAs), and Willibald Hauer (UYCAs), who thereby secured the gold medal.
