communale oö – Instawalk “Uprising and Memory – A Search for Traces in the Present”

As part of the “communale oö,” which will focus on the Peasants’ Wars in Upper Austria in 2026, we’re embarking on a special journey through time—400 years after the first uprisings in Gmunden and the city’s capture without a fight. Together with state-certified tour guide Elena Grill, we’ll explore sites of resistance on an “Instawalk.”

Instawalks are interactive, collaborative social media photo walks that convey knowledge on a specific topic in an entertaining way within a pleasant atmosphere, while guiding participants to the most beautiful photo spots related to the theme. Whether you’re an amateur photographer, content creator, or amateur historian—here, everyone can combine political education and media literacy with fresh air and creative expression.

The theme “Uprising and Remembrance—A Search for Traces in the Present” links historical sites of peasant protests with women’s activism from the recent past and brings forgotten figures to light. In this way, participants fill the “information vacuum” with their images online while rediscovering Gmunden for themselves. The goal of these group strolls is to unconventionally trace, document in a contemporary way, and publicly share the city’s history. This fosters a digital awareness of a culture of remembrance whose significance extends far beyond the region.
