Exhibition: The Magic of Old and New Exhibition Posters

Following the great success of last year’s exhibition “Places of Longing—The Magic of Old Tourism Posters,” the Deutschvilla is once again exploring the fascinating world of posters. This year’s exhibition features historical and contemporary exhibition posters by prominent artists —including works and motifs by Picasso, Dalí, Klimt, Francis Bacon, Marina Abramović, and many others.

They bridge the gap between Indian music, jazz, pop, and folk, all the way to Italian folklore.

About the Exhibition

For tens of thousands of years, people have been creating images—from the earliest cave paintings to contemporary art. Museums around the world collect, preserve, and display these testaments to human creativity. This exhibition symbolically features some of the most significant institutions, including the Albertina, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kiran Nadar Museum in New Delhi, the Mathaf Museum in Doha, and the Kunsthaus Zürich.

The exhibition features around 100 exhibition posters in 14 rooms of the Deutschvilla. They document major art exhibitions and connect two creative dimensions: the works of famous artists and the graphic design of the poster designers, which are small works of art in their own right.

A look at the collection also highlights a well-known problem in art history: women’s perspectives are significantly underrepresented —a reflection of the long period during which female artists were rarely exhibited in many museums.
