Burial in the crypt beneath a church was reserved for clergy, nobles and wealthy citizens. In the 15th century, the Dominicans also built the crypt underneath when the Marienkirche was built. The last coffins were reburied in 1967.
The crypt under the parish church was extended around 1700. Emperor Joseph II banned burials inside the church in 1784.
The crypt of the Coelestine Church was consecrated in 1679. The convent was dissolved in 1784 and the town of Steyr erected today's "Old Theater" in the former church building. The painting "The Crucifixion of Jesus" by the famous Baroque painter Johann Georg Morzer can be seen in the crypt.
After a short explanation in front of the crypt, the candle-lit crypt is entered in silence and meditative music fills the room.
