The artist duo Leonid Keller trawls through archives, their own documentation, illustrated books and magazines for visual materials that shape our understanding of cultural identity, ideology and power structures. The focus is on people: bodies, gestures, movements and the representation of their absence. They extract image details from this material, which they combine by exaggeration or reduction as large-format works on paper, collages, videos and sculptures to create new, fictional narratives. The results are in-between spaces - ambivalent, ambiguous visual worlds that keep meanings in limbo. This summer, Leonid Keller is condensing the sawmill into associative pictorial spaces that evoke and shift familiar visual patterns. The exhibition reflects the fragility of visual certainties and insists on the legitimacy of different interpretations.
Julia Ossko and Eugen Schulz have been working exclusively as an artist duo since 2013, pursuing a long-term artistic practice that has been accompanied by various grants and institutional funding. In 2024, they received the Culture Moves Europe working grant from the Goethe-Institut for Portugal. In 2020 and 2022, they were supported by the Stiftung Kunstfonds as part of Neustart Kultur. In 2021 they received the Initial Working Grant from the Akademie der Künste Berlin and from 2018 to 2019 the Working Grant from the Hans Charlotte Krull Foundation. In 2017, they were awarded 1st prize in the Willi Münzenberg Forum art competition.
