"When the work laughs / the poet cries / and vice versa" (Thomas Bernhard)
Scenic reading withThomas Bernhard's comedy, premiered in 1982 and starring the writer Moritz Meister, who likes to present himself as the German prince of poets, was once received quite critically in the German arts pages, but was well received by the public. Hellmuth Karasek noted ironically in Der Spiegel that "some critics grumpily remarked that the audience laughed." In fact, "Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh" is a feather-light, subtle comedy full of allusions to the vain cult of poetry and the senselessly rotating cultural scene: profound, comedic - and self-deprecating at the same time.
