This evening's program features the Ansfelden master's 5th Symphony.
The Fifth is considered one of his most difficult, but also most impressive creations, particularly because of its contrapuntal and powerful final movement.

This evening's program features the 5th Symphony by the Ansfelden master. Anton Bruckner himself never heard his Fifth Symphony performed with orchestra. Already seriously ill, he was unable to attend the premiere in Graz on April 8, 1894, conducted by his pupil Franz Schalk. Schalk created a distorted version with instrumentation retouching, which included a shortened scherzo and above all a 122-bar cut in the finale as well as the inclusion of a distant orchestra. The Fifth is considered one of his most difficult but also most impressive creations, particularly because of the contrapuntal and powerful-sounding final movement.
