Classical sound cloud 26th concert on Bruckner's birthday. As a festive prologue to the Brucknerfest Linz 2026, Riccardo Chailly and his Filarmonica della Scala bring two famous fourth works to the stage on Anton Bruckner's 202nd birthday.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony was composed in 1877 at the same time as Bruckner's Fourth, whom Tchaikovsky regarded as one of the few "outstanding German composers". A work full of energy, drama and biographical depth, between sounds of destiny and an exuberant 'folk festival' finale - another parallel to Bruckner's Fourth - which Tchaikovsky dedicated to his "best friend", meaning his pen pal and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. On the other hand, there is Sergei Rachmaninoff's brilliant 4th Piano Concerto. Composed exactly 100 years ago as the first work after his emigration to the USA, it has one foot in the Romantic tradition and the other in modernism, which is permeated by extended tonality, popular music and jazz. The exceptional Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev returns to the Brucknerhaus as soloist. This celebratory birthday serenade will be performed live in the Donaupark as Klassische Klangwolke 26! Classical music fans can enjoy this top-class concert in the open air on the banks of the Danube from 19:30.
